Interesting to see that this model does not have the scuppers on the side as my Dauntless 17 does. I would really like to close mine up on the side and somehow drill a hole thru the transom till the cabin floor

Hey Mike -
I'm about to purchase a 1989 15' Super sport Limited. I live on Casco Bay in Maine and am hoping to use it in the river but also between islands in the bay (open water). Have you used yours on the ocean? Any advice you can give me re: how it feels with some chop, is it seaworthy in general? Thanks for your help!!

I had a lot of fun in that boat. I also scared the heck out of a passenger or two fishing on the great lakes in it! I grudgingly sold it to buy a 17 Outrage II. I still look for it though with its very distinctive aluminum kicker bracket (I build it for a trolling motor, but it was robust enough for a small outboard).

The C. Raymond Hunt Associates claim design origin of the Boston Whaler 16 SL, in 1990. Huntdesigns.com referred to the hull as a Boston Whaler 15, since the hull is 15 feet 6 inches in length, and showed a photograph of the boat. See: http://www.huntdesigns.com/documents/...uction.pdf

I worked for Seaford Marine- 1961- 62, A Whaler dealer on Long Island NY. They were putting 40 hp 2stroke Johnson's on them. I have a 1976 13 with an electric start, 2012 Suzuki 25 hp 4 stroke, tiller steer. I had to cut the transom as this engine was bought for a different boat, that used a short shaft engine. This boat sits right on the chine waterline in water. Speeds of 23 knots, with 2 people, full gas tanks. Motor needed a whale tail installed to stop porpoising.

Paul, I am looking at a 1988 Revenge WT 22 that has twin 140 Johnsons on an add-on mount that I am trying to locate information on (the add-on mount). I haven't seen this on other Revenges. The Boston Whaler Catalogues from 1958 to 1971 referred to this model name as "SPORTS."
In the 1972 Boston Whaler Catalogue, the model name was both "SPORT" and SPORTS."
When the desert tan 13 came out in 1973, the model was listed as "SPORT."

I purchased a 1969 model Menemsha and love it! This rides as good as my Street Glide 103. I've received mixed opinions about my boat but she runs great with a 90 ETEC pushing her. One thing about her, there 's not one in every marina and boat dock. She's the new river queen in the Soddy Daisy Tennessee area but then again it don't take much.

Don't use stain where you have to walk (forward hatch). I stained everything else (using a cleaner first) and the color is beautiful. The cell structure of teak is hollow, which makes suction when wet, hence the use on boat decks. Use shampoo and cleaner for teak where you walk.

New to the site and new to whalers. I bought my 1963 with outboard for $340.00 last year. It's been in the water and started up just once in five years. Stencil 30053. I have the same issue with the console and the pilot bench has been replaces with swivel seats so I'll be fabricating replacements using the template on-line. Cool boat. I got stopped a total of five times on my one foray. Everybody wants to talk about the boat.

I have this boat. Its great. Mine has a gray bimini, S/S flagpole on the front and removable 2 step S/S ladder on the back. 40 horse yamaha. It is a one off --it was built in 1991 although the style was retired in 1988. At that time I ordered the commercial grade hull (70 more pounds of fiberglass) and later returned it to Edgewater Florida manufacturing plant to have boston whaler re-upolstering using their traditional upolstering. The plywood in the seats was replaced with starboard. And the windshields replaced.
Boat has hardly been splashed-the engine PMed every year and boat kept under wraps in florida.

According to the 1992 Boston Whaler price list they call it the "Custom Aft Seatback and the full cushion set"... $849

I am the 4th owner and just bought her in May/2011. The 1992 brochure that is with all the paperwork from the original owner calls it an optional "Comfort Package". They are OEM as all cushions match and are tan and not white. There is also a cushioned back on the seat in front of the helm and both have zippered pocket the length of the seat. so in answer to your question, maybe yes but not called that in 1992.

My husband talked about trashing it and buying a new fiberglass console. I said I wanted to refinish the boat/restore the console (seats are long gone). He thought that was too much work. I came home from work one day and he had torn out the console and the windshield was in such bad shape it pretty much disintegrated - into the trash and he didn't even try to make a template. I've been furious with him ever since! Before i start resoring the hull (I'm hiring someone to do it but don't have estimate yet), can you tell me approximately what a refurbished 1972 Nauset might be worth? My husband wants to just buy a new boat (easiest). But I think it would be better to fix it up.

My apologies for not answering the questions - I did not know my photo had been posted.
The radar arch is an original installation at the time the boat was first sold. It was made by Railmakers in California. Cost not known. They are still in business.
The canvass is the original Mills and has since been replaced (last year).
The side cloth panels were a pain so I have removed them and have installed coming pads using original Desert Tan upholstery which I purchased from Lois at Halls.
The bow rails are original from the factory.
The T8 is a high thrust Yamaha 4 stroke (8HP) and I use it extensively for trolling.
The Twin 135's have been replaced with a single 250HP new 2009 E-tec. Top speed is now 47MPH and fuel consuption has improved 57%. The boat runs like new and gets up on plane instantly and effortlessly.
Thank you for your kind comments and questions.

shkooyeil, actually the Outrage 25' itself was never called a V-25 in the catalogs. According to all the Boston Whaler catalogs, it has always been listed as an Outrage 24' or Outrage 25'. However, I do see on the photo above that this Outrage model has a name on the side of Outrage V-25.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I have not looked at this thread for several months!
Toybox. Without seeing the boat, it's hard to say anything about value. Nor do I know your intentions on restoration. Good ribsides I think are worth a lot of money, but "beaters" can cost a fortune to bring back, especially if they have stripped of original components. Find the best hull that you can, and pay the most you can afford for it. In the long run, you'll be way ahead.
I don't think the SIS 440 can be sanded, so I would sand the wood down before caulking. Varnish will not bond to it, and can be peeled right off, leaving nice white lines, so you can either caulk before or after varnishing.

Mike, I am almost finished refirbing a 25' Outrage center Console with the same motor bracket as yours. I am a little confused about the 2 large drain holes that go thru aft section from the cockpit to the transom. From the cockpit they just spill onto the aft section. There are 2 holes in the transom also, but there is no tube or hoses conecting the cockpit openings to the transom openings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I bought my Outrage as a project boat, so I do not know what the Mfg configuration was for the aft section drain holes.
Thanks,

After several years of searching, I finally found the seam material for the teak console and bow locker cover. None of the conventional caulking products work, nor are correct, including silicone, Life Seal, Life Caulk, etc. The correct product to use is made by "Teakdecking Systems, Inc," and is called "SIS 440 Teak Deck Caulking" in white. This makes sense, since these wood components were fabricated from teak tongue and groove decking strips. This product is a RUBBER based compound, and remains flexible. It is not available from boat stores like West Marine. I found it at Jamestowndistributors.com.

The rest is very weathered from the sun, but has been a loyal, safe and reliable boat for me for the last 38 years(I bought it in 1972 or so). Jim - A Ribside, or maybe a total "banana boat 19/21" convention would be a great idea. But where? Somebody's going to have to do some traveling and trailering, since most seem to be along the East Coast to the Midwest to FL and Texas. Don't think there are too many way West. It should be somewhere where people could consider it a special summer vacation destination. Lake Michigan anywhere between chicago and Mackinac? NY Thousand Islands? Lake Erie Islands? Cheasapeake Bay/Annapolis area?, Tennessee waters? FL in winter? Who knows. Won't be easy to get a good crowd, but it's worth thinking about.

NWA - It's not too early to start keeping your eye out. Could take years to find a good one and then be fortunate to be the first to get a shot at it. They are hot, get traded among friends, and go almost overnight if in good original gelcoat and teak console shape. Avoid a beater or "home altered custom retrofit" if you want to have something anywhere near all original. The restoration work will kill you dollar AND time wise, and you'll always have a "fixed up, non original" boat. Avoid paint if you want true value.

In answer to #3, as many here know, the boat was found 16 months ago, stored indoors and unused for over 25 years by the original owner. It only had about 100 hours of total use since purchased new. A once in a lifetime find. It is not restored, is all original, simply cleaned up, re-rigged with modern equipment and detailing, and all teak sanded and varnished. The trailer is brand new. The engine has 2:1 gearing also, which uses a 19" pitch prop. I am running a Mercury Laser II in 19" pitch.
For a 2.4 liter 200, with 1.87:1 gear ratio, I would suggest starting with a 21" Laser II. You may need a 23". That boat is going to be vary fast, at least 55 mph.

Mercury Marine told me that my 70 horse Mercury engine would push the boat no problem but the boat seems to go to about 20 MPH and then the propellor seems to cavitate and won't go any faster. The transom is 22 inches the engine is 20 inches. I was told you can have a difference of 3 inches from propellor to bottom of hull. Is that a bracket on the back of your boat. I think that it is Mills, or a real good copy using the origonal hardware & canvas as a pattern. There are no tags on the flying top or dodger.
The frame & windshield are definitely Mills Canvas stuff. I just got my hands on the side & rear canvas pieces, which are also from Mills, and they fit perfectly.

The extended bimini is in two parts. The original top plus a custom top. We love the difference this makes on hot days in South Florida. Also, the trim tabs are used rarely so I don't really know if they help with fuel. I have a 200 Yamaha on the boat...and I really don't burn that much fuel since I take it easy on the water. We love this boat. I have had three Whalers: a 17 GLS Sport bought new and a 15' Sport bought new. This one is definately the best of all worlds even though the other boats were great in their own right.

My boat is missing the captains bench and it appeared to have a front seat, which I will not replace. Also, any information on who can make a quality captain's bench and back bench. I have one of these boats (1963 Sakonnet).
Missing however is the Pilot Seat.
Note for those who may look at the drawing for the pilot console. The drawing on file here is a console model that the solid mohogony is from the table top down to about knee high. Then the lower part of the console is three sides plywood attached to mahogony with screws.
This era console on Sakonnet (with forward fishing deck, made of teak and painted white) mahogony woodwork was one piece, from table top right down to deck.
Anyone building new could use the published plans and just extend the lines, omitting the lower plywood panels.
Does anyone know if the two styles of making the console was an early verus later model design change, or was it always so, just depending upon the model/trim of the 16' 6" boats?

This looks a lot like the boat in our front yard, only ours doesn't have the captain's chair, and instead of a back bench seat there is just a flat fiberglass area and then a lid covering the battery compartment. Plus there's a large 35 gallon aluminum tank crammed in the front storage area. Trying to figure out how to make it more comfortable... The numbers (stencil) are 3A5340, so that seems to make it 1972.

Beautiful Montauk!
I am currently negotiating to purchase a 79/80 Montauk. The condition is nothing asspectacular as "Surf Rider". The seller has the original engine wich is just like yours accept it is a 75 hp.
The rails were one removed and replaced, the holes were filled by you can still see where the old rail sysytem was attached. The boat has potential. The owner is asking 6k.
There is some feathering in areas of the gelcoat and it is a liitle dusty form the weather. Trailer is a little rusty.
If you were to sell your baby... how much would you ask?
For what i have described, is 6k too much?
I am a lover of whalers and have never owned a whaler. The new whalers are $28,000. for a 17' ; out of my league right now.
Does anyone have advice that will please my wife...oh sorry, i meant me.
Thanks Guys... Just joine this sight today and i love it.

I grew up with this boat in Cape May, NJ. We had a '69 hull with a '72 Evinrude engine that wouldn't die, even if you drove a stake into it's heart!. My father owned this boat for over 20 years and it still ran like a champ into the mid '90's when he sold it. Unlike other commoners, we would painstakingly sand and varnish the center console and seat so that it would look as original as possible. Lot's of great memories with that baby!

TWIMC - I also have this boat, recently repowered with twin 135's. Had twin 175's when I bought it, but it was overpowered and they had corroded right through the heads. All Evinrudes. I would like to know where you got the radar arch, and how much it cost. Same question on the non OEM canvas with plexi panels. Also - Did you install the side panels in the rear of the cockpit? If so, how much of a job was it? Finally, did you install the bow rails or did the boat come that way. Your entire bow layout is much different from mine, and I like yours a lot better, but don't want to bankrupt the boat budget for it.... Oh yeah, what HP is the T8, and do you use it a lot?

It is a length of 4 inch PVC closed at one end and a screw cap on the other. It is used to stow a beach umbrella that fits through a hole in a table (we made) that clips onto the back of the pilot seat. A bungie cord keeps the umbrella in place when it is open. The umbrella is 6 feet wide so we get lots of shade.
