The first thing I noticed while disassembling the compass was the fill screw o-ring was was deteriorated and cracked (probably the original). Although Ritchie doesn't have parts available, I was able to find a suitable replacement (Danco #60 o-ring 1/4" OD x 1/8' ID x 1/16", Danco Part No. 96774; http://www.lowes.com/pd_198990-1366-9...facetInfo=) in the plumbing isle of Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse. The replacement I found (pictured left) fits more snuggly around the screw than the original (pictured right).
