Boston Whaler - Repower With Yamaha F70LA
Suzuki DF70A Repower Abandoned In Favor Of Yamaha F70: If you have been following this project, you were already aware that my efforts to repower my '88 Boston Whaler Super Sport 15 with a Suzuki DF70A had been delayed by pandemic related shortages of new outboard motors. After waiting more than five months for the DF70A, I revisited the outboard motor research which I had previously performed. Upon doing so, I determined that Yamaha's F70LA outboard motor is 90 lbs. lighter than the Suzuki DF70A outboard motor, making it roughly equivalent in weight to the '88 Johnson 70 HP 2-stroke outboard engine (248 lbs.) which was being replace. In addition to horsepower, engine weight is a critical feature in selecting an outboard motor. It turns out that the significant weight savings of the Yamaha F70 outboard motor over other brands combined with Yamaha's highly regarded reputation for performance and reliability are the primary factors in making the Yamaha F70 outboard motor the leading choice among 15' classic Whaler owners / enthusiasts. My past experience with an '84 Yamaha 40HP 2-stroke outboard motor was nothing short spectacular.
As the Suzuki DF70A outboard motor had not yet been delivered, no firm date could be promised by the dealer, and now believing the Yamaha F70 outboard motor to be the best choice for repowering an '88 Boston Whaler Sport / Super Sport 15, I cancelled my order for the DF70 outboard motor and began my search for a Yamaha F70LA outboard motor. As with the Suzuki outboard motor scarcity, all of the NH and northern MA Yamaha marine dealers whom I had initially contacted indicated no inventory of the F70 outboard motor and couldn't promise delivery before the Spring of '22. While I had resigned myself to having to wait until the Spring of '22 to repower, a southern NH Yamaha marine dealer with whom I had left a message responded that he had F70LA within their inventory. After 5-1/2 months of restoration and waiting for a repower, I was finally able to splash the boat.
