The 1/4" aluminum backing plate was ordered from onlinemetals.com ... at a significantly lower price than would have been requested by Boston Whaler. The stainless 5" and 6" 1/4-20 fasteners were sourced from boltdepot.com ... an absolute go to source for stainless steel fasteners ... particularly longer sizes and uncommon head styles. Rather than using a cut-off wheel or hacksaw to remove the excess length of the machine screws, I used a technique which my grandfather, a navy machinist mate and boatyard owner, had taught me in my youth. After the fishing seat mount had been installed and the 3M 5200 had set up, a set of vice grips was clamped to the excess machine screw near the point where the machine screw exits the nylox nut. Next, the vice grips were rocked back and forth to bend the machine screw. This rocking action fatigues the machine screw at the bend point, and within half a dozen or so rocking movements the excess machine screw length to break off at the bend point. Any burrs or remaining excess machine screw were then removed with a file. The method of removing excess machine screw length is effective, clean, very quick to execute, and requires special tools.
