This is a photo after the bench portion (middle) was initially constructed and screwed together. Note that each length of the 1x4s varied slightly in length. In the end, I just tried to leave about 1/4" of clearance on each side rail. This allow for expansion/contraction and for some movement when sliding from seat to platform arrangements.
