All that hard won dry space under console isn't much good if you cannot get 5 gallon bucket sized objects into and out of it easily. Also, for the necessary repairs, trouble shooting, and additions, I wanted an opening large enough to be able to get my head, shoulders, and both arms and hands inside for maintenance.
This is a Beckson hatch-- the largest I could find for the fit. It hinges from the top.
I cut the switch panel from a piece of aluminum. The far left switch is my trim/tilt. Switch to far stbd. is bilgepump. Three central switches control lighting in several independent steps. For example, if I want to be really sneaky, I may just want only my compass light on...
The control is a Morse MT-3. I just thought it a little more elegant than the standard Evinrude binnacle.
The steering is a Baystar hydraulic system. Yes, finally got the hydraulic leaks at the helm fixtures stopped.
