Hello, the reading i have done so far is unclear as to the steps to removing the lower unit and reinstalling it. The impeller itself is clear enough though. any help would be appreciated thanks

4 Bolts and it should be ready to drop, or get really loose. If not you will need to jiggle a bit. (and disconnect the speedo tube) Then it should come off. I cant recall if it should be in forward gear when you do this. Most important to check that!!! before you do anything. Do you have shop manual? Cylmers or Seloc? Both will help you.

You have to remove the shift linkage and remember the bolt under the zinc tab.

If memory serves, the shift linkage isn't an issue on the Yamaha engines of this hp and era in terms of removing the lower unit. It's a small splined shaft that slides into the receiver in the leg, much like the drive shaft does into the power head. But as Jon notes, don't shift the controls or lower unit when it's off the engine.

thanks for the info everyone, I think the shift rod is splined on this engine , i guess i will leave it in neutral and be sure not to move it otherwise once its off. whats up with the speedo tube ? whats it do ? i read all there is in the selco and even one thread i read had the person cutting it with a pair of dikes, this is a yamaha mechanic at a dealership. it looks like it is held on by a very small tie wrap on to a fitting, cut the tie wrap , pull up on what looks like a rubber tube and then , i assume , put it back on again and install new tie wrap. I will just start unbolting and see where it leads.

I have the same issue but with a 1975 70hp Johnson. Where is the shift linkage bolt located? Is there any lube / oil that I have to worry about? All I need to do is replace the screen guard so I don't suck up any weeds.

AD. I disconnected the speedometer tube on my Yami 40hp. Also, yes your shift linkage is connected just above the cavitation plate on your lower unit. What I do when I take my lower unit off is I leave the lower smaller nut in place and do not move it at all. If you move this small nut you will mess up the shift alignment. I put a wrench on the small nut to hold it in place while I put another wrench on the larder/longer looking nut. I turn the longer nut and break it loose. Once you break that free, you're able to keep turning it until it is free from the linkage.
Be sure the motor is in neutral.
As Kevin mentioned above, there's also a bolt under your zinc too.
