What is a fair offering price for a 1983 18'Outrage w/ 1995 Evinrude 150hp; w/ '93 Galv single axle trailer? Are these engines prone to break down?? Should I be worried about transom rot/stringer rot? Are the stringers in these boats wood?

No bottom paint, new gas tank and floor, a few blisters in the gel coat, mostly fresh water use. Overall in good condition. Engine has good compression and has been professionally maintained.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Cheers!

8-12k

There are no stringers in any Boston Whaler model.

The V-6 Evinrudes were considered to be a very reliable engine providing it was properly cared for. It is hard to give any impression without first looking the engine over.

After inspecting the boat, here is what I found:

Its certainly no show boat.
1) There is bad beach rub on the bow. Gel coat is completely gone and I can see the fiberglass matte through the clear substance, although it doesn't seem to be open to the water.
2) Hull has minor blistering below the water line on the bow.
All of the teak needs refinishing and the through hulls are all green from the 15 years of salt water exposure.
3) There is severe stress cracking near the anchor locker on the deck.
4)Engines oil injection system isn't working, so oil is being added directly to the gas tank.

Sea trial to follow................

That's a 16 year old outboard, how much would it cost to repower it ? Something you have to think about... A Boat's price is directly related to how old the engine is, many people think that because, "they" owned it, it's worth more.

Matt your are exactly right! A re-power is between $12K - $15K for a 150hp. I did ask myself whether or not in 2 - 4 years I wanted to have $19K or more invested in this boat. My thought is no way unless the hull was in perfect condition.

Well once I get a test ride and compression test, I will be able to tell to major things:

1) How wet is the hull?
2) What the motor condition is?

Thanks for th comments! Keep them coming.

J, I would not rush into anything. There are a lot of boats coming out of winter storage that will be on the market soon. For me the worst case scenario is once I settle on an item, a better one is soon to follow.....lol.

Good advice from everyone. Thaks! The update is that someone purchased the boat site unseen supposedly for the asking $8K.

We since have looked at a 1996 15' Dauntless w/ '96 Johnson 60hp and '98 Shorelander Trailer. This boat isn't an Outrage but would meet our fuel efficiency needs and allow us to store it in the garage. The boat is in A1 condition and looks like it spent its last 8 years in a barn. My concern is with the motor. It starts right up and idles fine. Compression is 125 psi acrossed all three cylinders, I check it myself. The gear case oil isn't milky. Any other checks that I can do, or comments???

For a comprehesive guide, search on this site for Whaler Vessel Inspection Document. I think it's under the Whaler Shopper sections.

Kudos to author Jeff R.

Shoot me a message if you can't get it. Good Luck!

a great source for an Outrage or any other Whaler you might want is oodle. Its a search engine, and free and when you submit your e-mail you get constant alerts with pictures of what your looking for. I've been sniffin for a 25 outrage for a while now, and its pretty neat to open your e-mail and see the latest of what is available.
I agree with one of the previous recommendations, there are plenty of Whalers out there, so take your time and get a good deal without having to add thousands as soon as you purchase it.
