Picked up 1989 Yamaha Pro50 that hadn't been started for 2 years sitting out side.
I'm a rookie Boater but this is what I think I should do.

1. empty fuel container and re fill with fresh gas. Should I clean out container or flush it with ;aquer thinner or something to get varnish out? PURGE BulB AND FUEL LINES OF OLD GAS.

2. put new plugs in.
3. new gass filter
4 Empty Oil reservior and replace it ( With what type of oil?)
5.remove screw from bottom of carb bowl and spray in sea foam cleaner.
6. spraY SEAFOAM CLEANER INTO CARBS.
aNY SUGGESTIONS ? AM i DOING THIS RIGHT?

Take out the spark plugs and shoot some fogging oil or 2 stroke oil or marvel mystery oil in there and slowly turn it over by hand. I'm sure those cylinders are dry and not lubricated. That's where you could cause the most damage trying to dry start those cylinders. I woke mine up this way after it had been sleeping for almost 7 years. And yes start with fresh oil, gas and lots of Seafoam in the system. Expect a lot of smoke until you run all the extra oil and Seafoam out. Then change the fuel filter spark plugs again, gear oil and water pump impeller, grease all the fittings and you should be ready for the season.

Welcome to Whaler Cenral Chuck!!

As for he two stroke oil needed for your motor, I'd use Yamalube. You can buy it through your Yamaha dealer. I've talked to several Yamaha mechanics and they said to stay away from other two stroke oil products in your Yamaha and only use the Yamalube. I've stuck with that advice and have had no issues.

Also, what the above poster recomended is right on the money too.

Use "Sea Foam" or Yammi "Ring Free" EVERY time you add fuel to keep everything running smooth and trouble free.

Also check your throttle linkage. Make sure it is operating smoothly and the chokes open correctly.

we got it to turn over. our gas tank was also two years old and the check valves in the ballon pump we all gummed up. disassembled and got it to work. Neighbor brought over his tank and we hooked it up. We cranked it a couple of times and finally started and smoked to high heavan. Little worried until the neighbor said "wow even started with my mixed oil.".. OUCH!

More oil is better than less.
