Thanks to the excellent advice from all the posts here I picked up a 1996 6hp Evinrude kicker for my 17. Took the boat out yesterday for the first time this year and could not be happier
The main engine ran great with it's rebuilt carbs and the kicker started up on the 2nd pull. 6hp seems like the perfect match in weight and power for the hull. Now all I need is the aux bracket to steer from the helm and I am good to go for striper fishing in a 2 weeks
Glad it worked out for you Ed. Let me know when you may go stripper fishing, I may join you and tag along with my 17 and my 19 year old son. From what I know the strippers are running up the Hudson now... May already be north of the TappanZee.

Many other boats and outboards in my boating history
The Whaler is the one I like the best!!!
