So I plead with fellow Whalers. I need a drive shaft for my motor. I snapped it last summer and a busy winter has put this project off. I am either looking for a short shaft, Which has been harded then I though or an new lower unit. Any help would be great. Thanks....

I've had a lot of luck with www.boats.net when it comes to finding parts.
Also, I've used Northland Performance, Keewatin MN. Phone #: 218-778-6166 and the guys name is Pete. They deal with a lot of used parts from Northern Minnesota and Canada which is cold fresh water......minor to no corrosion.
here's Northland Performances website too:

Dirk,
I have a 1970 400E short shaft. I don't know if the parts will fit. If you find out that they will we can make a deal.

It would be helpful if you posted your engine serial number. I have some contacts in my area that have a collection of older Mercs and maybe I can find you something.
Please email me at sosmerc@wavecable.com

Do you still have the broken drive shaft. Take it to a good machine shop it could be welded together, if the break is in the lower part of the shaft above the water pump. Its done all the time when converting a long shaft to a short shaft. Also a coupling can be made to fit around the break. I just had a driveshaft shortened that way (converting my `61 Evinrude 75 starflite from long to short shaft, (those years OMC had a removable 5" section in the midsection.

Rich,
Thanks for the advice. The issues is the shaft snapped inside the power head. I think only about 2 to 3 inces is still in the head. I cant even get a pliers up there to grab it. I need to dis-asseble the whole head to get at the piece.
