Water pressure gauge

Member Personal Page Posts: 82 Comments: 0 Joined: 03/01/06	I would like to put a water pressure gauge on my '85 V4 Evinrude Is there any reason that I should not eliminate the tell tale and use that outlet for the pressure sender. I think the gauge would be more accurate that way rather than teeing into the tell tail hose and keeping it functional. There is no other provision to pick up water pressure on this motor. I know that I can drill and install a nipple but the tell tail is already there. Is the pressure relief provided be the tell tail necessary? Appreciate any input.

They used to sell water pressure gauges for many older models? http://www.whalercentral.com/articles...icle_id=43 If not, what about a water temperature or head temperature gauge? I had a temperature gauge on my 1999 Johnson 175 and felt that was better than just knowing the water pressure. I don't think I have ever seen an automobile with a water pressure gauge. Only temperature. Have you contacted an Evinrude dealer? Let us know what you find out.

I know there are kits available but I was trying to avoid drilling and tapping if it was not necessary, this engine does not have bung as some others do. I have seen older OMCs that were not made with tell tails. Other than an indicator, what is it's purpose? Does it purge air from the system?

The water pressure only uses a small amount of water to determine the pressure of the water flowing thru the cooling system. that water must exit the system thru the tel tail, otherwise you have a system with an entry point but no exit point. Outboard engines are made to cool using a continuous flow of water, not a closed system like a car.

Member Posts: 210 Comments: 1 Joined: 03/13/08	By the time the cooling water gets to the tell-tale it's probably downstream of the poppet/pressure relief valve and not give a reading of value so teeing off or not is a good option. If a kit or procedure is recommended that would be the way to go. If you want to improvise/reinvent a better way suggest you find a good schematic diagram of the cooling system. At the helm I installed a SPDT switch and a single temp guage so that I could choose the temp from either the port or starboard head. Port side always ran a few degrees cooler than starboard side. She's still running after all these years in the salt... No drilling or tapping was required... Member Personal Page Posts: 82 Comments: 0 Joined: 03/01/06	MW, Good idea, but I actually have two hour meters( the original analog one and the one on the floscan gauge) Revenge Fam, I like the idea of a second temp sender so I could toggle from port to starboard. I always found the singe sender sort of "half comforting" The only "kits" I have found for water pressure consist of plastic T fittings and the only place that could possibly be used is on the tell tale. My old Merc had a brass plug from the factory, just removed it and installed a nipple. I can't seem to find any info on where to install a nipple on an '80s OMC V4. Thanks for all the input, I will let yall know if I find a good install.
