I guess I really should buy a service manual for this motor to answer little questions like this one...

2002 Optimax 200. I took the motor cover off to have a look-see after winterization and found two items of concern: some tan colored wires with bullet style connectors that appear disconnected, and an 8-pin connector with orange boot missing its weather cover.

Here is a pic of the brown wires, they are in the upper right of the pic, are they supposed to be connected?

Here is the 8-pin connector missing its cover - I want to order a replacement weather cover, but don't know what this harness is called or for.

Thanks!

Are you sure they aren't tan. Tan wires are normally associated with engine temp (overheat sensor to the alarm) As for them needing to be connected, without actually being there to trace it out, It's hard for me to tell if it needs to be connected. Is your engine smartcraft equipped? If it is and you're not getting any type of sensor alarm, there's a good chance they are not used.

Duane,

Thanks for the response, yes they are tan. The engine is smartcraft ready and the reason I had the engine cover off was to find the 10-pin connector to see what I need to wire up my new System View gauge... Funny you mention it, the analog temp gauge does not work...

Follow the wires from your temp gauge and see where they end.

The wiring illustration for 2001/2002 3 litre Optimax indicates the 8 in harness is for Smartcraft connection.

The air compressor has a two-wire sensor for temp and it should be connected. Nearby on the Port Head is an engine temp sensor and it has 4 wires. Black is ground, The tan with blue tracer goes to a plain tan lead, which ends up at your temp guage. The other brown with black tracers connect: one to a grey lead and one to what I think is black wire with orange tracer. The compressor leads connect: one to a grey wire and one to similar black wire with orange tracer just like the engine temp sensor.

I hope this helps.
The early years of Smartcraft wiring can be confusing as the wiring changes between the years and not all SmartCraft guages are compatible with all years of supposedly "Smartcraft Ready" engines.
