I was thinking of upgrading from the 15' Sport to a larger Whaler (mrs. mw is glowing, and cranky). I'm a bit confused over the difference between the two models, any help is appreciated. Prices look like they are in the $12-22,000 range (yikes), I paid $3100 for mine 16 years ago, I love it but, I think for saftey's sake I better upgrade, my family will be put in nothing LESS than a "Whaler", EVER !....WE KNOW !
The information below is how I personally feel about the different models. Keep in mind that all Whalers have there place. I would not have taken any other boat up the Colorado River except for my Sport 13', the 13' was perfect for this type of shallow, rocky, water.
Here is my outlook on the Outrage series.
I owned a Sport 13' for 13 years and always wanted a Montauk. Instead of looking for a Montauk, I went looking for an Outrage 18'. At that time, I could not find an Outrage at a good price so I ended up buying a 1978 Montauk. It was a great boat and I owned it for 15 years, however, once I did finally buy an Outrage 18', there was no comparison.
The Outrage 18' will go just about anywhere the Montauk would go (shallow waters) and almost as nimble. It was however a much better all around boat for my needs. About the only major difference is storage. You can't fit an Outrage 18' in a standard garage. The Outrage 18' also uses more fuel, 90 hp on the Montauk (usually) as opposed to 150 hp on the Outrage 18'.
Looking back on it, I shouldn't have waited so long to move up to the Outrage 18'. I am not putting down the Montauk, but the Outrage is much more of a smooth riding boat in heavy chop no matter how you look at it.

I have tried larger Outrages but keep coming back to the 18' for my needs.
So, if you are thinking about moving up to an Outrage 18', I would highly recommend it.
Joe is right. You will end up with an Outrage 18 sooner or later. On the other hand, the Montauk is just a great little boat and I have enjoyed getting back into one (I have owned three of them.)
I almost think it is best to start with the smallest Whalers and work your way up. That way you enjoy them all. As you have the 15 now, I suggest you acquire a Montauk. I GUARANTEE you you will love it!
I also guarantee there will come a day when you realize you cannot live without a 22 too!
To specifically answer your question about a comparison between the Montauk 17 and the Outrage 18, look at it this way: They are the same except an Outrage 18 is half again as much boat.
Half again as much size.
Half again as much horsepower capacity.
Half again as much weight capacity.
Half again as much expense to purchase.
Half again as much expense to maintain.
Requires half again as much space to store.
Ya know, I would be happy if I had a BW 13', I'm overjoyed at owning a 15', a 17 Montauk makes me drool, an 18' outrage is wild, Mrs mw wants the one like Joe has, 22' w/cuddy, I'm realistically looking at the 17' Montauk w/ a 90 hp, I don't think I can afford it but, when I REALLY want something, I've been known to work several jobs at once (temporarily) to get it. The one thing I enjoy about the 13' and 15' models is that you can drag somebody out of the water quickly and easily (something that I've been doing a lot of over the past two summers), I could sell my Mustang (87 GT convertible Oh yea, she's "WORKED") to get the 17' Montauk but, TOYS are so hard to come by as an adult (o.k kind of an adult), Thanks again for your help Guy's.
i have a nauset from 1966 (or something like that because nobody can tell me wich one is it even with hull number !)and i am selling it . i want to buy an outrage. when i see all your comments, like JOE KRIZ or TOM W CLARK, i believe that i must choose 18' instead of 17' , why ? the 18' is stronger than the 17' ? there is less problems on 18' ? The Outrage 18' also uses more fuel than the 17' ? how much ?
second question, on mine i have a 90HP, as opposed to 150 hp on the Outrage 18'
which is difference about fuel ? can you tell me something ?
on a montauk for fishing, when i am alone i need about 1 galon/hour
whem i am going fast about 4 galon /hour
for an outrage 17 or 18 what is it ?
