Got home last night after long & tedious meetings at 7:30. Breezed through the house, greeted the wife, 2 kids & 2 dogs, grabbed a beer out of the fridge, and then snuck back in to the garage, pulled the cover of my 2000 Montauk, fired up a little Buffet on the stereo, and sat at the helm for 20 minutes to decompress. Does anyone else do this....or should I seek help?

You've already sought help by doing exactly what you did! To me there's nothing more relaxing than doing what you did and dreaming about the blue waters of the Florida keys.....and Jimmy Buffet certainly helps enhance those dreams.
You have the "Whaler fever" but it's certainly not something that you should seek professional help with as you're treating your symptoms properly already. ;-)

Been there - done that. It's my sanctuary.
The wife never has to tell me to take the garbage and recycling out to the garage. Usually takes 10-15 minutes because I end up reorganizing something in the boat, re-rigging a fishing rod or simply looking at the old girl.
You all feed the madness too. Never a lack of ideas or DIY help here. Always something to do.

Is that ALL you get up to? I believe you're fine.
1. Making engine noises means you're regressing to 10 yrs old.
2. Listening to the distress channels means you've a mommy complex
3. Uncontrollably adding unnecessary objects - your other boat is a Honda Civic low-rider.
4. Wearing your life vest - seek immediate psychotropic aid!
Yes, I gave her a stroke and told her it's only 17 DAYS UNTIL SPRING!!!!

Should anyone find a cure for Whaler Fever, do not tell my wife. I am perfectly content in having this condition
"I've got a schoolboy heart, a novelist's eye, stout sailor's legs and a license to fly........"
(Hopefully I did not just butcher the best Jimmy Buffet song ever!)

And I thought I was the only one!!! I spend as much time aboard my boat on the trailer in the garage as I do in the water. It's good therapy and less expensive than a trip to the shrink.

i would be lying if i didn't admit, that EVERYTIME i walk out on my deck I AWAYS walk over and check my Whaler out. Check out the engine, check the hull, look her over, and think, when am i taking you out again.............hmmmmmmmmm this weekend looks good. Or, maybe tuesday night after work. Or, i have company coming down, think i'll take them via boat to Snoopys. You get the drift !

I talk to mine almost every time I walk past her..........tell her how good she did, how soon we will be back in the water again and how good she looks. You're perfectly normal!

I've been known to go out into the 20 degree garage wearing a winter coat and having a beer with my brother while we sit on the boat as we plan for the warmer weather. Its not weird...its therapy! ha ha

My wife and I have been thinking about building a new house and with that new house I've been thinking about building a garage with a taller door so my Tee-Top can fit inside. Funny I was planning on doing the same thing you guys are already doing. What I have been doing is going through my GPS and cleaning up alot of old waypoints I've marked and adding new fishing spots. Done with Alabama gotta do Florida next. I've had cabin fever for a month! I'm going out this weekend! I don't see how you people aka "yankees" deal with this cold weather. It's been brutally cold for us down here all winter long! Which is of course relative, I mean 2 weeks in a row with below freezing temps is ice box for us.

Do You "zone" out to that really great day last summer, and look ahead to another great season ? I think that it's normal behavior but, "Mrs. MW" said that when I put on the shorts, and walk through the snow to do this, it's a "BIT" much !

Don, I have a 25ft. Revenge wt and I must say say I do the same. In the dead of winter I will sit on the Revenge and polish, clean and think of of all the great memories this boat has logged. We were the Safety Boat for the movie "Titanic" as well as a camera boat here in Nova Scotia .We were a recovery boat for the Flight 111 Swiss Air crash. The latest in 2009 , we were the the lead Rescue Boat for the World Laser Championships. (325 boats). Jimmy Buffet is probably our first choice as well as the odd bottle of " Moose Head Beer " Cheers, Goodie

I was sitting here reading all of the comments on this thread--great stuff. Proud to be "ill" and part of an elite group of "whaler head cases" I think it is perfectly acceptable to rub the hull of your whaler and talk to her gently. Never raise your voice to her. Speak to her with respect. But, if she talks back, you may have a problem and should probably seek professional help outside of this group!
Looking forward to nice weather and a season of boating!
Happy Easter, whaler nuts!
