Well, to begin with it is not a Montauk.
It is a Cohasset II

I also doubt it is a 1975 model unless he has changed consoles to the older Cohasset model.

The maximum rating for the engine on this model is 100 hp so the model is overpowered. Overpowering is up to the individual and their insurance company and possibly some individual state laws...

I don't think anyone can tell you about the condition of the boat without seeing it in person.
It seems like a fair price if everything is working OK.

Thanks for the quick reply Joe. If the owner is not truthfully telling me that this is not a montauk, I don't know what else he is misinforming me about. I think I'm going to pass on this one. Why can't one of you respectable forum members sell me your boat?!

A lot of people think that all Boston Whalers are called Montauks...

I have no idea why this is but it may have something to do with the popularity of the Montauk name.

It is a common mistake by people that don't really know what they have.
It does make you wonder though and think about what people are advertising....

If you believe his add, he has only owned the boat for a year. My guess is,the boat was advertised and sold to him as a Montauk so that's what he is selling.

There's only one way to know if it fits your requirements - go see it! The splutter he talks about makes me nervous, as I too ended all too soon with a boat with a minor splutter which miraculously ($$) turned into a new engine.

I'd go visit if it's not too far away as it's looks pretty cute. As you can see there are an awful lot of examples of clunkers turned gems within these pages. You never know!

Maybe a WC member in your area might help you assess it and I would have someone check the engine compression etc. That'll save you tons in the long haul. It's really hard to tell the age of an engine - hrs etc unless you see the paperwork or an expert look at it. Check out the price of a new engine if you don't think spending a few bucks on an examination is worth it.

Let us know what happens.

Thanks for the reply guys. I've decided to pass on this one. I'm going to be patient and hopefully it pays off.

Just because a Whaler has some age on it is not necessarily reason to run from it. I've seen some very old Whalers in excellent condition and some new ones in very bad condition. You either got to check it out for yourself or get someone with a little knowledge to check it out for you. Also, in many cases, Sellers tend to omit some of the negative points....not saying they are lying about it, but many times the whole picture doesn't surface until you get her in the water, so check it out thoroughly.

I agree, the "Sputter" put's my antennas "up", as does the age of the engine, I think that you can do better.

That sputter is just fine with that engine. I had that same 115 mercury on a boston whaler 16ft bass boat 1974 model and it made that sputter noise. I thought it had a miss and it cost me 500.00 to find out that the carbs on that engine are stacked and at low speed the fuel is only going into the bottom carbs so when you get down on it it sputters until it catches up. It is cool once you get used to it.
The 115 works well on the 16ft hulls. She will fly. You won,t have to run her wide open.
