Does anyone know the dimensions, and or any unique ways to replace the hatch cover for the front anchor compartment on a 1989 Montauk. I just bought the boat and that cover is missing. I have seen pictures of both fiberglass and teak pieces, but I will need to either build one or buy one if anyone has any ideas.

TNelson,

I have seen several of these for sale on eBay from time to time.
You might keep an eye out there.

The Teak hatch cover is not that difficult to make and there are a couple of companies that make them although I can't give you there names right now as I am away from home.
I am in the process of making the drawings for these but do not have all the dimensions yet.

Thank you for the reply. I would like to buy a used original if possible. If I cannot, I will make one. I was thinking of using mohogony flooring. One other question, I need to feed a new wire to my bow light. I understand this wire is actually run under the rub rail. I have not dug into this yet. Is this going to be self explanitory once I get into it?

Something to consider if you're buying an original or making one on your own... When you are using the anchor (with excess rope still in the locker) there's no hole or notch in the hatch to run the rope out of so if you step on the hatch you 'll either pull the screws or possibly break the hatch because the rope is hanging out. Possibly why so many of them or gone or missing.

I've thought about how I could cut an exit hole in the hatch but I'm sure I'd bastardize integrity of the hatch and eventually end up breaking it. I see the new ones are hinged on the side and they've built an exit notch... No help for me.

Bob

ps: Let me know if you need photo's or anything, I have an 89 Montauk in my garage.

Bob made the sugesstion I was going to. If you end up making your own move the hindges to the side and notch the front of the locker hatch. This will allow you to have the line run through a notch in the front of the hatch and right up to the norman pin. The image below shows how we would run the rope through the locker pick up hole. We talked about changing it to what I mentioned above but we just never got around to it.
