I'm interested in a couple of small boats. Not looking for a large boat, just something inexpensive yet reliable to use close to shore in calm waters. The plan is to hold onto the boat for quite a while. The decision may come down to the motors as the prices are similar. One has a 1995 Yamaha Pro 50 hp 2-stroke (13' 1995 BW Dauntless). The other has a 2003 40 hp Mercury 4-Stroke (2006) 152cc Key West. I'm awaiting more specific information concerning hours before choosing one to go forward with a survey, but both appear to be clean and okay so far. Thanks.

Both are good motors, you need to find out which has the best service in your area. The decision comes down to which boat you prefer. To me there is only one choice ;-)

I have a 2001 40 Hp Mercury and have been quite happy. It is a two stroke though, so I am sure it's a bit different than what you are looking at.

That "Mercury 4 stroke" is actually built for Mercury by Yamaha. We call them Mercaha's.

I've got a couple of seasons on an early 90's Yamaha pro 50, very light weight, 100 to 1 factory oil ratio, always starts. It's only 700 cc, not much low end for a 50 hp. Carbs like good fuel, but very easy to rebuild when gummed up. Some lower unit corrosion on mine with salt water use. MartyD

All the engines built now are very good. Name any engine manufacturer and there is a die hard group that stands behind it.
