The recent "what would you do" post got me thinking. I have a similar question but don't want to hijack the thread. The difference is I have decided to repower.
It is a 1969 13 sport with a 1969 40 hp Johnson. While I agree it is very cool to have a classic motor on a classic whaler, I have decided to go with a new Yamaha 25 2 stoke short shaft. I want the reliability of a new engine. Plus we won't be able to get new 2 strokes forever, so I figure now is the time.
So the question is what to do with the old 40? It did/does/could again run. It needs a carb rebuild. Before undertaking the carb I decided to try ascertain the condiiton of the rest of the motor. The lower unit gears look nice and crisp. It has about 120 psi in both cylinders. Aside from the carb, prop, and cosmetics I think the motor is basically sound. But what to do with it?
I don't think a motor of this vintage is worth much to most buyers and I need some parts to make it trustworthy: water pump rebuild kit, carb kit, gaskets, prop, lube, plugs, some paint, and likely other items before it is all done.
I would do the labor myself, but I would still need to sink a maybe $150 to $200 bucks into parts and shipping. Then I will have a motor with maybe $400? Sadly, it seems parting the old girl out and fixing her up may be about a financial wash. Am i wrong here?
It bothers me to basically toss a workable motor. But, it is 40 years old! I guess I could fix it and keep it but I can't see myself using it for anything.
I'd sell the old motor. There's most certainly someone out there who needs whatever it is you have. Binkie is involved with classic motors and in my opinion, he'd be one of the better sources for information pertaining to this matter.

If the boat is relatively original, then the motor/boat package is certainly appealing to purists. Somewhere on the 'net there's a '57 13 with a '57 Evinrude that was redone by the 3rd generation. It about brought a tear to my eye. I'd mothball that motor w/o doing the repairs. (BTW I found a '57 motor cover laying in a chicken coop behind my mechanic's shop - and had to have it).
Is it an electramatic? Meaning an electric shift or is it the standard mechanical shift. Just wondering as I had one on a '69 sport growin up. Ran better than a timex. Real workhorse.
