I was just reading some recent post about stenciled hull numbers. As I am redoing my 1966 13 sport,I will be repainting the interior. Question is... Should I document the number stenciled on my transom first? I have pictures of it, and it is recorded on my bill of sale. After painting it will no longer show. Should I get a higher athority to sign off on the number, or have it placed permanantly somewhere else on the hull?

Leave the original stencil alone. Place a piece of blue painters tape over the number while painting. When done remove it so that the number is visible.

I agree with Norm. A good painter should be able to blend it is so it should not be noticeable. A little wet sanding and buffing should hide a lot.

How about this idea.
You have photo's, get an email from Chuck Bennett with all the info Whaler has on the boat.
Repaint the boat, covering the current stencil number.
Now when your all done, get 1 inch high letters / number in the vinyl color of your choice and reapply the "stencil" number.

Hi George,
If you are going to repaint the inside blue you should do the painters tape thing. It would probably blend right in after you polish the small area where the numbers are. The numbers are in the gelcoat so you won't wear them away even if you wet sanded the area to get the color back. If you covered the numbers it would look like you had something to hide.
Kamie has a good idea getting the boats history. By the way Kamie how would I get in touch with Chuck Bennet?

Well my boat was originally shipped to a marine dealer in Jacksonville FL. It was bought there by a promenet business man her in Savannah, Ga where I live. From its original purchase I can follow its history thru several other hands, all close to the original buyer, up till the time I bought it. The business man here in Savannah had a very famous son. Myles Lane, the ex pro fighter refree who was refreeing the night that Evander Holifield had his ear bitten by Mike Tyson. Miles later when on to become a "Judge" on daytime tv. Pretty nice association I think and it makes the hull better in my view.
