I am considering the purchase of a lightly used 1999 Montauk 17 with a Yamaha 90 Inshore series motor. Is this motor suitable for saltwater use? I have searched many forums and have not been able to answer the question. Any help would be appreciated.

There is no such thing as an "Inshore series" Yamaha 90. You and your motor will be fine.

Great set up. Got one myself. Fine for saltwater:

I think that inshore was more of a branding than a change to the 90 Yamaha motor. If I remember it had a decal that faded to green. It should be fine for salt water use. Still you have to do a lot of washing and cleaning to care for any salt water motor.

I would beg to differ on that. I have one on the boat I am restoring.

I stand corrected.

I can still assure gloucesterman that he and his motor will be just fine.

From what I understand the "inshore" series is actually designed for saltwater use.

Thanks for the replies. Feeling much better about the "Inshore" designation.

Just remember to flush out your motor after "EVERY" use. A good washdown on the outside, any chip's or peeling paint after the season must be addressed (sand, prime, paint, easy patch work, spray paint's avail. @ the dealer). Keep it WELL GREASED, and it should last a long time. I use "Interlux" Trilux "Prop & Drive" anti-fouling "CLEAR" paint on the lower unit and motor bracket because I moor my boat, it REALLY help's discourage marine growth.
