Adding Seating to a Montauk 17?

Member Posts: 36 Comments: 0 Joined: 02/02/06	I find myself often getting asked to ferry people from small local airport out to another island, or vice versa, in the Montauk. I dont like adding people/weight to the bow, but most people prefer to sit instead of standing behind the standard seat where I would prefer. Has anyone added temporary seating to their Montauks? I was thinking of something as simple as a 2x12 cut to fit across the boat, with some blocks on the bottom to keep it from sliding right and left, and keep it wedged up against the rails. I know it would be noisy sitting right in front of the engine, but it would sure make the boat better from the helmsmans standpoint. Putting some adults in the bow makes it handle like an overloaded wheelbarrow, and we do have some swells here. I guess what I am asking is what have others done, if anything. Would that be called a thwart seat? havent been able to locate any info on the site. is there a "search" function I cant find? ( ha ha.) Edited by Tom W Clark on 11/22/06 - 9:47 PM

Member Posts: 36 Comments: 0 Joined: 02/02/06	Thanks. The teak swim platform is perfect for what I had in mind. It might even tend to stay in the boat, from the looks of it. Can still reach everything and stash fenders etc. underneath and out of the way. Gave me some ideas.

I think the original owner had to special order it from Boston Whaler when he purchased the boat. It remains in our boat all the time. There is a picture of it in "Robert's Orca". You may be able to find one used or make one. I also have cushions for it that our original Whaler. It may be hard to find one but keep an eye out on this site. Robert

We troll offshore in hundreds, or thousands of feet of water. We also dive for lobster and conch, and ancient shipwreck stuff, and use a diving ladder quite a bit. Wife wants to know if the seat on your Whaler folds down flat? We need quick access to things on the stern, sometimes. Last night we made a three hour round trip in the pitch dark, during squalls, offshore between the islands and the reef, for example. Four foot swells and another foot of chop. A 12" x 63" piece fits back there of 3/4" material and you can get pedistals to mount it to the floor at any marine website for less than $20 each. The seat piece and back are less than $100 in plastic. I plan to mount a back to it that is on door-style hinges so it folds down for easy access and engine trim. Still trying to find a way to keep it upright though and a inexpensive cusion is not easy to find. Will post pictures when/if it comes together. Any thoughts?
