Hi all,

Yet even more water pump questions.

I went to help someone "Fog, Flush, Winterize" (you know the drill), this engine yesterday, and we put the rabbit ears on, turned on the hose tap 1/2-3/4 way "ON", "All Clear", water on, fired her up.

I noticed that the "Tell Tale" on the motor was NOT pumping after a few seconds of running, so I shouted out to "SHUT DOWN", which we did. I carefully checked everything, all looks good, fired her up again, no water out of "Tell Tale", someone said "You're used to smaller engines, bigger ones take a bit longer to get the pump going, and water flowing", I just kind of shot him the "Hairy eyeball", we tried again, no water, I kept my hand on the head of the motor while running and it got pretty hot, I again gave the shut down signal just as the "Over heat" alarm went off.

The guy I was helping THEN connected the hose that flushes the motor when it is "off" , and was going to try that (with motor OFF) but it didn't seem like a good idea to me to introduce cold water into a hot aluminum head, so we waited until it cooled.

We hooked up later and tried it (engine off), and water came out the "tell tale". This new type of flushing system with the engine off is totally NEW to me, was I doing something wrong ? Is there a by-pass valve somewhere ? Multiple "pick ups", the ears were on the "pick up" screen and it was clear ?

The boat came out of the water fine, no problems, but is the water pump now cooked? Air locked ? Doesn't add up ? He wanted to fog quickly without the water pump working properly but, I insisted "NO", if there is no water coming out of the tell tale right away you don't run it, period. (That's what I was taught anyway.)

Sunday was a tough day to get a hold of Yamaha, the whole thing left me scratching my head. Any idea's? Any "Bone Head" moves that I did wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Thank You.
