I have a 1995 Outrage with the 225 HP Yamaha on it. I just got the boat, but the top speed at WOT is between 39-42. I feel like the boat should go faster than it does. Could it be the prop or is there something going on with the engine. If anyone has any info that could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
T

Can you give some more information, RPM at WOT, current engine mounting height, and model and pitch of your prop?

I also have the 21 outrage 1995. I have a Mercury 225 of the same year and I get the same numbers at WOT. Thats at about 5100 rpm.
I have had the boat for 4 years now and this has been a consistent number with the engine trimmed.

The WOT Rpm is right around 5200, I am not sure about the mounting height or any of that. The guy I bought it from did not know the size of the prop, I believe it is the original prop that came with the 225.
Nbp that is good to hear that you get the same WOT. I was just wondering what RPM/mph do you cruise at??

There is no "standard prop".
To determine the make, size and pitch, remove it and look on the inside of the hub.

It would be useful to know what boat we are talking about. Boston Whaler made quite a few Outrage models in 1995.

OK, that's good to know because Whaler also made the Outrage 17, Outrage 19, Outrage 24 and Outrage 27 in addition to the Outrage 21 in 1995.
Let us know what propeller you have on there now. Brand, model, pitch, etc.
What is the WOT RPM range of that motor?
Is the motor a 1995 model as well?
What is the gear ratio of its gearcase?
Does your boat have bottom paint?
Do you boat in fresh or saltwater?
Does your boat have a T-top or any other large accessories that might ad weight or wind resistance?
How are you measuring your boat's speed?

The boat is shrink wrapped, so I can not get to the prop to be able to tell the kind. The boat is bottom painted as well as has a T top. I measured the speed off the gps in saltwater.

OK, that helps. I found some factory test data I have for the Outrage 21 with a Yamaha 225. That boat did 51 MPH at 5400 RPM with a 14" x 19" aluminum three blade propeller so yes, I think your boat is slow.
The T-top will definitely kill some speed but not 10 MPH.
Not much to be done about it now, but next Spring when the boat goes back in the water, there are a number of things we can do to help you figure out what's going on.

I have a 21 foot outrage with a 130 on it and I'm doing 39mph at wide open. No T top though. Sounds slow.

Class of 73 -- You have a classic "banana" Outrage 21. Issy24 has a 1995 Outrage 21 which is a completely different and much heavier boat.

1996 Outrage 21 with 1998 Mercury 200 mounted 2-holes up, WOT is 50 mph when running light on gps at +/- 5700 rpm with either 17" Vengence or 18" Enertia props.

Besides the prop is there any other reasons for the boat being slow? Like something wrong in the engine?

My uncle has a '95 Outrage 21' with a '95 Yamaha 200 hp 2-stroke, bottom paint and a t-top. It has a stainless prop, but I'm not sure what size. I had the boat out in the spring testing the new GPS I had installed and it was running just over 36 knots at WOT if I remember correctly.

95Outrage17,
If your uncle's boat can do 42 MPH with 200 HP I would expect it to only be able to do 44 MPH with 225. That seems a bit low too.

Hi Tom,
Well, I wasn't going for max speed at the time. I think I trimmed the motor somewhat to coax a little more speed, but I was more interested in checking the functioning of the GPS rather then the boat's top speed potential. I thought 42 mph with a 200 hp on that boat wasn't too bad considering the size of it, the t-top, the age of the motor, the paint on the hull bottom isn't exactly perfectly smooth, etc. I don't recall how much fuel was in it. Maybe it should be running a little faster at WOT...
As a side note, I had a chance to try out a '98 Outrage 20 this summer with a '98 225 Mercury EFI on the transom. The boat had no bottom paint and no t-top. The motor seemed to be running fine, but I must say that I was certainly not impressed with it's top end. I didn't have a way to measure speed, but it certainly didn't seem as fast as my uncle's 21'. Certainly had me confused as I was under the impression those Merc V6 EFIs were pretty powerful engines.
