I changed out the water pump today, the usual fun with the shift rod connections, and shift rod gromet's falling out when re-assembling. I removed the starter motor to get to the shift rod and linkage, I don't have the "Bible" to the motor, is there an easier way to disconnect the shift rod linkage ? It took most of the day, I just went slow, and steady, I put "Never sieze" on all the pump bolts, and lower unit bolt's (and worked them in) before re-assmbling the lower unit, The new water pump is pumping strong, F N R gear's are shifting smoothly, man what a pain in the %$$, new curse word's were invented, and nobody in the house is talking to me despite an offer to take everyone out to dinner.
Matt, Is your lower cowling the kind that is two pieces and held together by very small bolts? If so and not the one piece unit, I find taking the lower cowling off makes it much easier to access the shift linkage bolt/pin and reduces profanity inducing frustration significantly!
I changed out a w/p on a larger Engine this season, we did what you said and split the cowling. The shift rod connection was different as well on the larger engine (easier). One less head ache come Spring, my engine's ready, I finished
the "Fog/Flush", "lower unit oil change", "Grease all fittings", "lube steering arm" and "tune up" today.
