I just picked up a 86 Johnson 4hp sailmaster to use as a kicker for my 72 Sakonnet. On the side of the motor it has a 100 to 1 ratio decal. Will there be any problem running this off my main tank? Should I just carry a small tank with this ratio mix?
Thanks

HD, what is the ratio mix for your main engine? 100/1?

I would look up the ratio before I trusted a sticker on the engine.

My main engine is a 50 to 1. I thought most engines were but I am still new to boating

OMC went through a brief 100 to 1 phase. I believe there was a service bulletin changing back to 50 to 1. Use your main tank, you'll be fine.

I recommend you use a 50:1 gas/oil mixture. OMC did try the 100:1 ratio in the late 1980s and indeed, the motors ran just fine with it, but it was found that that ratio did not leave enough residual oil on the cylinder walls to adequately protect against rust and corrosion, unless the motors were used on a very frequent basis, likely daily.
They reverted to the 50:1 recommendation circa 1990.
It is recommended that motors from that era be run on a 50:1 ratio regardless of what the stickers that may indicate.

I had an '87 48 spl, I remember the sticker read "100:1" but, I also remember everyone warning me to run at "50:1".

with the 50:1 ratio, i'm told even my E-TEC which is set for 100:1 will run on it with no ill effects, so if you have 50:1 for your main tank, you should be fine with the 50:1 for both your engines.
