Engine stuck in "up" position

Member Personal Page Posts: 47 Comments: 0 Joined: 01/03/08	I have a 1989 70hp Yamaha and the engine is stuck in the upright position. What would cause this and how do I get it down. Fortunately, it got stuck after pulled it out of the water and got it onto the trailer! I have tried the trim switch on the engine and on the console. All the electrical systems seem to be working including the trim switch except it won't engage itself in the down position.

Member Posts: 177 Comments: 0 Joined: 05/24/07	Assuming you have a good battery, no blown fuses, bad or corroded connections... try using a small hammer to simply tap the tilt/trim motor that drives the hydraulics. Sometimes the motors develop a little sticky or dead spot. If tapping the motor activates gets the motor going up an down again you can try running up and down a few times and the rough spot might work itself out. If it happens again you might have to replace the tilt motor.

Member Posts: 210 Comments: 1 Joined: 03/13/08	Yamahas usually have the motor brushes mounted at the mounting bass of the trim motor. If you try tapping recommend hard plastic screw driver handle unless you have a hammer with plastic head. Some times you can get the relays to start working again by taping too. Will it lower using the manual release valve and if so will it trim/tilt back up. If you get it down and it goes up try to trim down and note the difference in motor sound. Member Personal Page Posts: 1533 Comments: 3 Joined: 10/28/06	Look on the motor transom mount, I believe it is on the port side and you will see a hole about the size of your finger midway up on the side.............there is a screw in that hole that will release the pressure and allow the motor to go down.........Check your fluid levels first and then go from there eliminating problems...........make sure you tighten the screw back before operating again Tom 1979 Sport 15'

The manual screw release hole on my motor is on the starboard side near the bottom of the bracket near the transom. When you turn this screw counterclock wise it will release the pressure and your motor should come down. Make sure you have someone holding the motor or your out of the way. It comes down pretty fast. Then tighten screw. When you want it back up release screw, haul motor up. and put on tilt lock. Tighten screw. I think you said the electrical is working so when you press the tilt switch do you hear a motor sound? If so, I would check the fluid. (If you haven't ever done that, it is another learning curve) If you don't hear the motor whine then give the motor a bit of a tap. My motor was one of the problems and my mechanic replaced some boken parts inside the motor. ($50. parts instead of $500. for new motor) Roy Warner 1983 17 Montauk - 1998 Yamaha 115 V4 2 stroke
