I just picked up a very clean 76 Evinrude 40 hp, its missing the magneto and flywheel (electric start). So now I'm looking for a donor motor or just the parts. Does anyone know what other years and models could fit? thanks
When I'm not sure of which models are interchangeable I will go to a parts store(i.e. iboats) and look up the part numbers and see what year/models it covers. Coils go with flywheels so I looked yours up and it looks like your coil is part 18-5172. It is listed from 75-83 but a different coil number is listed from 77-84 which may use a different flywheel for the same horsepower. It is weird that they have two different ones covering so many of the same years. A 1976 35hp uses the same coil as the 1976 40hp but changed in 77. Hope this helps.
