Anybody use plastic crab pots by Fathoms Plus? I bought six of them off a Commercial Spot Pawn guy. He said they work well for crabs. I broke down and bought a new puller instead of making one (ouch). I gotta catch a lot of crab this year so the sting wears off from my pot puller purchase. Anyone do any Spot Prawn shrimping?
I started shrimping a couple of years ago. A whole different ball game than the crabbing I have done. That is why I bought the pot puller last year. I crab in 50 feet of water and shrimp in 350 feet of water. Never heard of the Fathom Plus, but the stacking feature looks nice. Crab and shrimp are both scavengers so dropping into a hole if you can find one, and having a bait that will cloud up some works well for both species. John
I read your post again and I am confused. The pots you bought are designed as a crab pot correct? A shrimp pot is different animal all together, mesh size, escape holes, and weight are some of the differences. John
I think they are for made for shrimp and lobster. The guy I bought them from said he had a few hundred that he used for Spot Prawns but he also used them for crabs during the first part of crab season. They have the 4.5" escape rings. Looks like they will be fine but they are a little different. Thats kinda why I was asking if anyone had used them. Im gonna try them for Spot Prawns also in the spring maybe.
Different rules for different states, but in Washington the minimum mesh for crab is 1 1/2 inch and for shrimp it is 7/8 inch for one month and then it changes to 1/2 inch. I use the 7/8 inch. Make sure to research what to do for your area when shrimping. It is real easy to lose gear. I lost a pot my first year doing it. John
