Hello. Newbie here from Maine with a 2009 150 Montauk with a Mercury 60HP BigFoot motor.
When motor is idling and put into forward or reverse, it shutters, and sounds like a cat fight is in progress in the lower unit. The dealer has been here twice stating it's a Mercury trait for this model with the stainless prop. It sounds as if the prop is gonna fall off! I am not happy at all and wondering if anyone has heard of this trait of Mercury outboards?
Thanks.

You may simply be experiencing "prop rattle" which is a problem for many motors, especially four strokes with stainless steel propellers.
If you not already doing so, I suggest you use a Flo-Torq III hub kit with your prop in lieu of the standard Flo-Torq II hub kit. The Flo-Torq III hub kit will greatly reduce, if not eliminate, the prop rattle and will also help soften the "shift clunk."

Thanks Tom. I will pass this info on to the dealer although, it seems they should already know this...... They are suppose to call Mercury this morning for guidance. Hopefully we can talk again unless I decide to turn this whole unit back in to the dealer. I'm pretty disappointed.

Mercury refers to it as gear case clutch rattle in one of their rigging guides. They said in 2001, in reference to 30/40 & 50/60 Bigfoot model 4-stroke models, "require the use of specially designed rubber hub to reduce the instances and severity of gear case rattle." and "use of other propellers though not detrimental to performance or durability could result in clutch rattle."
As Tom said and knows well the Flo-Torq III hub kit should help very much if it's just the normal rattle and not an adjustment needed or more serious issue. Think I also remember reading some where Mercury supposedly made a change to those gear cases to reduce rattle. Any reports on how successful they were with that change?

Here is an update.....Dealer says my motor already has the Flo-Torq III installed. They are getting another package from their other store and trying it out to compare with mine. They think it may be more that just the hub......They will swap motors if the new one performs without all the vibration/shuttering that mine is doing... hope they hurry, its getting cold in Maine...Brrrrrrrr.
More to follow.

Nothing against the Dealer but are YOU sure a III kit is installed? It's easy to remove the prop & see. Go to the Dealer and compare parts in a II vs III Kit. Take the prop off & see.
You could also ask the Dealer to try an aluminum prop which won't rattle. I have the same engine as yours. My stainless prop is whisper quiet with the III Kit installed. My aluminum is fine with the II.
Either way, I'd be sure a III Kit IS installed in your current stainless prop.. Winter's on the way!

I think I might be experiencing this on a smaller level. I noticed it when I switched to a stainless prop. I'd be curios to know if the III corrects the problem.

Well, Ive been on line and seen what appears to be a longer shaft bushing and a two piece rubber thingy on the III series. It looks exactly like what is on my motor. I think the series II has a shorter shaft bushing. The dealer was quite certain a series III is installed. I hope its this particular motor thats at fault. I am waiting for a call from the dealer this morning. They water tested both boats last evening to compare.....More to follow!

A little terminology:
The bronze or steel part of the Flo-Torq hub kit that is splined is called the "Aft Adapter."
The large black part is not made of rubber but rather a plastic made by DuPont called Delrin. This part is called the "Drive Sleeve".
The drive sleeve of a Flo-Torq II is a single piece. The aft adapter is short.
The Flo-Torq III kit has a two piece drive sleeve and its aft adapter is almost twice as long.

Great info for we novices. Thanks. I got word the boat is on the way, fixed with the proper combination of hub parts. It seems the repair guy jury rigged the original hub the first repair attempt, and just before their water test last night, installed a new series III hub, and say this fixed the problem....Why is life so difficult at times???? More to follow.

It's like I asked...are YOU sure a III is installed???
Too bad these days it seems we need to be something of an expert for anything we hire someone else to do. It's sad that just doing a job correctly is now considered to be 'High Quality'. It used to mean above & beyond just doing it right.

I am as sure as what the dealer told me. Mercury does put the series III on these newer motors, Ive been told. The dealer cant figure out why a brand new motor and series III hub didnt work the first time which is why they jury rigged the second attempt which took out all the play on the shaft, (Not good to do because it made it worse), and finally just installed ANOTHER series III which made all the difference in the world!!! The boat/motor is PERFECT now!!!! Go figure.........
Thanks to everybody who helped me to figure out this mess.
