I showcased my 190 Project in the Members Project Albums section.
I believe the results of my labors have come to fruition: The boat tops out at 40.2 mph with half tank of fuel and solo passenger. Engine is a 115 hp. E-tec. I built it "light" with a small, low profile consule, and absolutely no rails or other frills. I did mention on some previous posts while I was doing the project, that I thought the boatyard where I bought the engine may have in fact, "stole" 1-2 mph by remounting my engine one notch lower than where I had initially placed it. The reason they got their hands on my project at all was that they had to certify the instillation and do the first test run. This may still be the case; so, next year, we agreed to trial one notch higher now that I have had some familiarity with my new rig and its capabilities.
Nevertheless, I am already pleased with 40 mph. I am wondering if anybody has an experience with the stock, out of the dealership, 190 Montauk model which is 115 hp. Mercury powered re WOT performance? I have been looking around on the water for just such a Whaler stock rig to drag race. My thinking is that I have a lighter, faster rig, a lighter engine that doesn't hold down the stern, and just a plain better engine. Am I biased or am I right?

Boston Whaler posts performance reports on their site.
Here is the link
They report 40 mph with 35 gallons of fuel, 335 lbs of people.
Curious why you mounted the binnacle on the port side?

Thank you for that Whaler Inc. website that has the performance data for their 190 Montauk stock model with a 115 hp.Mercury. I'm starting to humble; maybe I should notch my engine up to see if I do indeed get another speed increment. I notice the Merc turns about 6100 rpm to get their 40 mph on the graph. My E-tec turned 5150 rpm to get roughly the same. And I didn't have 335 pounds of people aboard. I weigh half that.
Regarding why the binnacle on the port side of the consule? Never really thought about it much. Certainly the Morse MT-3 control can be configured either way. I am left handed. I have a side consule 17' Whaler since 1983. When I had to rerig this boat decades ago, I moved the binnacle to the port side of the consule to more closely "center" the binnacle cable run over the rigging tunnel. So, I just have a standard feel for this configuration over the years and I thought I would keep both boats similar.

Kinda like an English and Australian thing.
Drivers seat on the right and the shifter on the left....
Hey, they do make left handed golf clubs too.
We all have different ways of doing things and what we like.
I have a lifetime friend that does almost everything right handed. Eats, writes, throws, etc... but he is left handed when he bats or golfs.... Go Figure...
Whatever works for you...

I'm curious as to the main purpose and use of the boat....fishing.............work boat..............crusising or just having fun racing around? Great looking project and like others, I'd love to see some full completed photos

I've been watching your posts since you began your project and have looked at your personal pages several times. Great job!
I have the 2007 190 Montauk with 115 4-stroke stock from the dealer bought late in 2008. I could indeed do 40 mph (gps) @ 6100 rpm the 1st couple of trips with just me and 60 gals of fuel on a slick-calm lake. Since I've added more weight & more 'stuff', I'm down to about 39 mph and 6000 rpm.

If you're only running 5150 RPM at WOT, you need to try a prop with lower pitch - WOT should be 5500 - 6000 RPM. In the process, you'll probably pick up a couple of MPH. Also (you may be aware of this already) it's really easy to raise the motor on the trailer. Just lower the trailer tongue to raise the stern, put a block under the skeg, then remove the upper mounting bolts and loosen the lower ones. Raise the tongue to lift the motor to where you want it, then reinstall and snug up the bolts.

As many of the prior threads state, there are several factors to determine proper setup. Mounting Height of the motor is the best place to start since it is DIY and can impact the next factor, prop.
What hole is the top bolt in?
Top of Engine
0
0 --- #
0 ---%
0
I would think it "should" be in the 2nd(#) or 3rd(%).
Prior to discussing the prop, the height should be considered and if necessary raised. A performance retest should be done noting load, fuel, wind, current and speed trimmed out via GPS. Several runs in opposite directions can give you a good average.
I gained 200 rpm's at WOT just by going up one set of holes.

Evinrude has specifics about how high the motor should be mounted. I don't now the details but I believe I read something in this forum regarding the subject. I'd start there for comparison sake. If by Evinrude's direction, your motor should be higher, I'd say thats a no-brainer. Prop selection would then be my next consideration as I've read the E-tec 115's sweet spot is between about 5600-5700 rpm. Sounds like you've got more potential in your setup yet to discover.

Thanks for your comments, Mr. Graumann, re your Whaler 190/Merc 115 hp.
All my boats are fish boats. I am using SPEED as a paramater for just the best technical setup. Part of fishing is getting to places; so, in a sense, the boat needs space to carry things, and sometimes a lot of things. Sometimes it carries umbrellas for the wife; sometimes it needs to carry surfboards. Sometimes even a couch, etc., over to the Vineyard Fish House. Therefore, there is NOTHING so elegant on a small boat, IMO, as free space. A boat, IMO, should not be a floating condominium. My wife disagrees on this subject.
I posted a couple more pics in my Project Album if you are interested.
The boatyard has my engine with the top bolts in the top holes of the engine mount; therefore, you cannot lower the engine any lower in this configuration. I look forward to raising it sometime.
I agree, that a different prop or engine mount producing more than 5150 rpm. at WOT may net me more SPEED.
