I have a 1992 150hp Johnson Saltwater that has been stained below the waterline over the years by the tannins in our waters in the Mobile Bay area. I'm re-powering my 18 Outrage with a 115 E-TEC and will be selling the present engine. Any recommendations on what to use to get that brownish stain off the lower unit?

I have used Barkeeps helper on the Hull and trailer. It comes in a can like comet. Try a little on a wet rag and see if it works as well as it did for me. At hardware store, couple bucks and works for me.

Starbrite's Instant Hull Cleaner will clean that yellow like magic. Put it in a spray bottle. Never use an abrasive powder on your painted engine (nor your car!).

I like "Bon Ami" cleanser, at 100 years old, "it has'nt scratched yet", Earth friendly too.

I will second Bar Keepers Helper, it's mild abrasive like Bon Ami but contains Oxalic Acid which will dissolve water line and rust stains. I stock up when at Wal-Mart. Of course Finnegan is right on about using a abrasive powder but wetting helps prevent problems. It was originally sold as a polish for brass and as we all know fiberglass or automotive polishes all have abrasives in them.

Have you tried wood bleach, or Y-10?

Hi, I know this may sound too easy but, If you use a product called "the works" it is a tub and tile cleaner and could be found at Wal-Marts. It is about $3.00 a bottle and works within minutes without scrubbing. Give yourself a break and try it I am sure you will be amazed as I was. Hope this helps, Dino

Oxiclean is a pretty good cleaner.
