I have a 1974 13' sourpuss with original Mercury 40 horse 402. I will be using this boat almost exclusively on a small lake for tubing/skiing so top speed is not too important but good torque for hole shots and maintaing plane in the turns would be essential. What are some ideas on the ideal setup without re-powering as the Merc runs great. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm under the same constraints so what I did was buy a 4 blade prop. The prop is made by Piranha Propellers the prop is called Comp Prop. It is made of composite material, very light and very strong. I've be using it for 2 seasons now and no signs of any problem yet. It allows me to maintain speed while turning instead of the stalls I would experience before. I maintained the same pitch as my 3 blade aluminum. I also use a Sting Ray hydro foil on the motor which greatly assist in getting on plain while towing. There are a few different kinds of hydro foils and props, this just what I happen to use and it wouldn't be enjoyable to tube behind my boat without them.

I have a 2001 40 HP Mercury on my 2001 13 Sport. I changed the 14 pitch stock prop to a 13 pitch and added a Sting Ray hydrofoil. I can pull a large tube really well with two adults in the boat and one on the tube.
It would be nice to have a bit more power and a larger boat to eliminate some of the impact of drag from the tube. Kids love it too. Can't beat the 13's for what they can do in a small package!

PM CES. He towed me at 260# on a kneeboard behind his '66 13 w40hp Yamaha yesterday. Had a blast.

We pull 2 wakeboarders or 2 slalom skiers (each dropping a ski) behind my boat all the time!

I must be doing something wrong as with my setup, pulling the tube is about all it will handle and I couldn't imagine 2 of anything going very well. I honestly thought I was doing good to be pulling the one tube.

Tubing should be no problem with a 40. I have a 28 on mine. Never any issues just pulling up on a plane in a straight line if the person is less than 200lbs and ON the tube. When we were teenagers, my brother figured out that if he dragged his knees/feet as low in the water as he could he could keep me from getting up on plane with the tube. I quickly figured out I could get on plane by circling the tube and then either gradually widen the circle and pull him anyway, or do an S turn and yank the tube right out from under him. :-)

I towed my 13' from Dallas. Tx to just north of Atlanta, Ga to visit family. Matt and I managed to get together a few times on Lake Lanier. Matt wanted to see if my 13' could pull him up and I said, "sure, no problem". I guess the 13's are "The little boats that could". Lol.
Great meeting you and your family Matt. Thanks for the pictures, I'll email the pictures I have to you soon.
