I am considering purchasing a fuel/water separator. I have a rebuilt 90 OMC with about 2.5 hours on it. Should I wait until the break in period? How do you size the separator and why brand to buy?
Thanks.

It's not necessary to have a fuel/water separator for portable tanks like you have but it sure doesn't hurt.
I have the Sierra brand.
Others like the more expensive Racor...

It's my understanding that with the Racor you can only buy replacement filters from Racor brand, but with the Sierra and similar, you can use filters from different manufacturers.
We run our Etec off portables and I recently changed our water sep filter, was surprised at the silt that was in there. Never a bad idea to have one in your fuel line...

When you say "we" do you mean a marina or just the engines you have?
I think its a good idea, I just don't want to get the wrong brand or wrong size, if that matters.

Just mine.
I'd go with a stainless housing if I had to pick up another today. Take a look at the Sierra Stainless, they offer them in 1/4 and 3/8"

I have a Raycor, it came with the boat. I like the fact that it has a clear bowl that attaches to the filter so you can see how much water is in the fuel. It also allows you to drain the water out of the filter.

Modenacart, Moeller Marine also makes a respectable unit. The cartridge is interchangable with Racor and probably Sierra. The head mount bracket (where filter threads on to) is really the determining factor due to 2 available thread sizes. Purchase the smaller more common thread size bracket (varify with retailer). Moeller and Racor also offer a filter that incorporates a reusable thread on plastic clear water bowl with a petcock under the cartridge. This is handy for draining any visible contaminents. When its time to change the cartridge you reuse the clear bowl and purchase a matching filter, be it Moeller or Racor. A new o-ring will accompany the filter. Check out my Project Album (Moeller Fuel Tank Install) for a view of the Moeller assembly I mentioned. Enjoy...

I like my Racor. I had a 435 Cat with a large Racor with the clear bowl in my Kenworth. Never had a problem with the Racor fuel/water sep. Would def. recommend something on your boat. My 22' Revenge has a Racor with the clear bowl. Fantastic to be able to see exactly what kind of water is in a tank of fuel.

I have thought about West Marine, but here they seem to be about 50% higher then other places.

Looks like West Marine is not too out of line when considering shipping. Which separator should I pick for a 90 Evinrude 2 stroke? I don't think it maters that I am breaking the engine in. I still have about 6.5 hours left of breakin.
