1988 15' chain locker clamshell location

Member Posts: 10 Comments: 0 Joined: 03/07/06	I have just finished repairing & painting my 1988 15' Sport. There was no clamshell on the forward chain locker drain when I bought the boat. I have just installed a new drain tube & would like to know the position of the clamshell over the drain. Does the clamshell cover the drain fully, only half way, or does it just sit forward of the drain? Anybody have any pics that I may look at to see the position? Thanks in advance for the responses.

Member Personal Page Posts: 1827 Comments: 10 Joined: 01/08/06	I have the 15' Sport (1976), and the "clam shell" covers the hole fully, facing straight back to the stern. This is a great feature, as "Ballast" water can be added/subtracted, to the nose for different wave conditions.

Hope this helps. I'd like to see some pics of your 15' sport. These are pretty rare from what I'm finding out. I'll give my email in case I can't get the pics uploaded. The quick reply is only for convenience so a person doesn't always have to click on the "Post Reply" button. sporty, The clamshell will not fit over the drain tube as it is not wide enough. It fits forward of the clamshell just enough to clear the O-ring and any caulking. What kind of condition would you want to flood that and how much would it change your ride condition?

Member Personal Page Posts: 1827 Comments: 10 Joined: 01/08/06	Hi, Sorry for the late reply, it holds about 5 gallons of water, also my vent is directly over the hole, I'm not the original owner of the boat, so it may not be factory however, it works very well. Ballast can be added when the boat is not moving, 5 gallons of water can add some nose weight to punch through a light chop on the bay (the boat is a bit less bouncy), also if I fill it up when at the dock, it lets my lower unit just make it out of the water when the engine is raised.

Member Personal Page Posts: 1827 Comments: 10 Joined: 01/08/06	It seems to work best when you are the only person in the boat, fill it almost to the top, some splash water will spill out when going over chop but, thats o.k., it will even out, it gets you up on plane a hair faster when your alone, sometimes I keep it empty through the chop, to get that "Dirt bike" sensation when "grabbin air" over the waves. That front platform really makes the 15' sport great for fishing. I have also discovered that when I bring Mrs "MW" and Jr. to go swimming in the cove, I can get my 15' whaler outfitted with a hot shower afterwards. The front wood on mine is a dark mahogony plywood. A small campers "SOLAR" shower bag fits right there on the plywood heating up by the sun. An oar doubles as a pole to hold up the shower bag when ready to use, you now have a hot shower after your swim. This Idea works great but, due to the lack of real estate on the 15' sport, it is a bit tight for room, besides, ya wanna cool off, not heat up in the summer time, but IT WORKS ! Might be good for a remote diving spot or to shower up and hit a waterside restaurant after swimming, camping stores sell that shampoo/body wash that does not pollute when the bilge kicks on.
