I have an 88 spl and we are having a lot of trouble painting the cowl. We have shot three coats already and there still is some orange peal. The last coat will be shot either today or tomorrow. Is this common?

Sadly, no.

Hate to say it, but it might be better to consider stripping and starting over. Once you get the peel, it means there is a bad bond of paint to the surface it is applied to, or too thick a coat was applied at one time. Adding paint to it only makes the layer thicker, and it seems likely it will be a problem later on. If you are like me, your eye will be drawn to the peel portion every time you look at that motor.

What kind of paint are you using? Tell us the prep work and what primer you used.

Is the peel isolated to specific areas, or is it over the entire surface? Are you using a metallic base coat followed by a clear coat?

Its isolated to specific areas. It has been sanded between coats to where there is no orange peel left. I am not sure exactly what primer was used. Prep work was sand blasting the old paint off then primer, then spray paint, sand spray paint.
