I just had a chance encounter with a gentleman who has been going to Sandy Point every summer for about 50 years. He told me that the red granite monolith just off the shore used to mark the center of the channel and that it was always known as the "folly"; but he didn't know why.
Does anyone know any Sandy Point history and/or know why that stone structure might be called the folly?
WOW! That is close to a story I was told about that monument by someone else ... He said the rotating bar was on top of it and I think he said it was the 20th century prohibition ....
The guy I met the other day said this monument was the center channel marker ... not an island (I know they move around) ... if they are not the same, I bet the locations were very close and the information got crossed over the years and many people now call it the folly even if it isn't the original ....
