New owner of around a 1968 13'. What are you guys doing for steering with the cut-out transom?

John,

I assume you still have the 15 inch shaft engine. Yes?
And the original style cable and pulley steering system. Yes?
And you want to get rid of the cable and pulley system? Yes?

If so, then you could mount the 15 inch shaft engine on a setback bracket. This should give you enough clearance to put the newer style Teleflex cable steering system in.

Or, if you are thinking about changing engines to a 20 inch shaft, then you would also need a setback bracket and the newer style Teleflex cable steering system.

I have a 1964 13' bare hull in pretty good shape that I'm trying to decide on what to refinish it with. After that I'm carefully planning each stage of the build from the mounting of the short shaft 1986 Johnson 40 horse outboard, controls and steering to a nice home made center console and other amenities. I love to scour information on the web and look at pics of other peoples projects for ideas. Eventually I'll have the same dillemma in figuring out the best way to mount the Teleflex on the boat.

The Teleflex steering is much safer, and easier to maintain, I have it on my 15' sport, the only problem is that I can't get more than a few years out of my cable because the 15' models are so low to the water (transom) that a lot of back splash comes in, it's still easier than the pulley system, that was a nightmare.
