Trim Gauge

Anyone know how to test to see whether you have a bad sender or bad trim gauge? The sender pivots freely but the gauge moves very eratic or locks in the all the way down position. I have the OMC Tech serirs gauge.

What year? The manual gives what the volts should be in the all the way up and down position. I have a 1995 manual

Im interested in this also-my ga. stays in the down position. I have a 1979 johnson javelin. Thanks...rich

When you turn the key off, the gauge should go about neutral.
If it doesn't, then there is something wrong with the gauge.

Thanks, Joe, I'll try that tomorrow----haven't really paid a lot of attention after I shut key off..Any suggestions on what brand of ga. is best if this one is bad? I think that probably i"ll have to start upgrading the gauges., If one went probably more to come. Thanks...Rich

Is your trim sending unit stuck in the down position? Go back to it and see if it moves freely. If it doesn't, but grease it and manually move it until it unsticks.

I believe your manual should give a voltage check for the gauge too.

Brand new Etec and System Check gauges installed last summer, the trim gauge worked for the first 2-3 times out and then intermittently since. I'm wondering if these gauges/sensors have inherent issues?

Mine is doing this, nut when I turn it on it pegs in the all the way down position which makes me think that the signal is coming from the motor, but perhaps the gauge is shot.

Tom,
There are 3 wires connected to the trim gauge not counting the blue wire for light if present.
1. Purple (power on with key switch)
2. Black (dedicated ground wire from engine trim switch harness)
3. White with tan stripe (wire from engine sending unit)
Remove the white/tan wire and see what happens to the gauge. The needle should float somewhere near center.
If not, then there is a direct short in the gauge and that would be the problem.
If the needle does float, then something is wrong with the sending unit.

Anyone put this on a Daunltess 16? I was looking at the back of my boat and I can't figure out where I would put them, seems like there is always something in the way!!! If you have and have pics, I'd love to see it.

Mr. D: I elected not to buy or install the trim guage on a new Etec and boat I put together this spring. I find the guage useless compared to just having a sense of "feel" of where the trim should be for the given sea condition and/or boat load.

I changed all my gauges recently to the newer System Check gauges.
You can see the trim gauge floating around the middle with the key switch off.

You can also see that the voltmeter is at 0 with the key switch off.
Totally different from the trim gauge.
Also, the tach does not go to 0 when the key switch is off. It floats too. The tach only goes to 0 when you turn the key switch on but obviously not when running.
