We bought a 2004 Mercury 40 HP which was already rebuilt because an oiling failure. So now we mix the oil ourselves when we fill with gas. I was wondering how to hook it up so it mixes the oil by itself again. Mixing the oil ourselves seems like it is inconstant and makes the engine run different sometimes. What do you think?

I think if you want it hooked up you take it to a good merc mechanic. I had my 100 hp merc rebuilt because I let the oil tank run empty. The reason it ran out was some check valve did not check and it used twice the oil it should have over a given time. The point is there may be more to it than hook tank fitting to pump fitting and fill with oil. Personally With a 40 hp motor I would keep mixing.

You shouldn't be inconsistant mixing the oil yourself. You may have other issues.

Another option is that you could buy the oil in bulk (1 gallon), and get the plastic measuring cup from the marine store (has conversion to gallons printed on it). It's easy, consistant, and should last most, if not all of the summer with a 40 HP (depending on how much boating you do). A little "Sea Foam" in the mix keep's the fuel system & combustion chamber running "Clean", new spark plugs make a big difference too.
