I am replacing the instumentation on my Montauk. When I bought it, she came with a voltmeter and a tach. I'm installing a new voltmeter, tach, fuel gauge and a speedometer. My father says that some outboards have an intake in the lower unit so you can keep from installing the pickup tube to the transom.
Does anyone know anything about this? I have a 90's model Mercury 135. I don't really know what to look for. My other question is this: Is there a port somewhere under the engine cover where the hose from the speedo connects?
On the top of the lower unit where it attaches to the center section, on the flat of the cavitation plate but around to the front side, there would be a barbed fitting to attach a plastic line to, that would be the pickup for a water pressure speedo.
Otherwise, a pitot tube is probably your only option short of an electronic paddlewheel for a digital gauge or GPS speedo (more accurate than water pressure).
