Went and looked at a 22' Outrage with a full transom. It initial had a Whaler Drive mounted on it (plugged holes made me ask and Broker said yes), but now it has a painted metal bracket.
Nice boat except the deck has a big soft spot and their asking a high price ... but I saw no scupper or drain hole in the transom. Is that standard? Meaning you must use a bilge pump if you take a wave over the side?? Or is this Motor Bracket covering it.
Never been up close to a full transom Whaler before. Besides the drain hole question, anyone know the pros/cons of a full transom vs. a standard?
What year is the boat? More than likely it had an OMC Sea Drive on it and NOT a whaler drive. To the best of my memory the whaler drive models had scuppers while the Sea Drive hulls did not. They can be installed though. A full transom is nice to have however, it does take up cockpit space. Resale on a real nice closed transom whaler drive is higher than that of a standard.
What is their asking price?
What motor is on it? How many hours? Compression Numbers?
Is there a trailer?
What is the over all conditon of the boat?
If the floor is gone then I bet the tank is ready to go if it is a salty boat.
has it been stored on a trailer or in the water?
Who did the patch work on the transom?
Etc,
Etc,
All things to consider which the asking price...however, sounds like a boat I myself might pass on...
The hull is 1986, with 1998 opti max, alum. trailer(possible needs new tires), no bottom paint, T-top with electronics box, bait station, depth finder , gps, stereo, trim tabs, spare prop, live well, console and seat covers, complete boat cover and VHF. There are some items I may have missed, but the hull only has one ding which we could find(GTL is my dad). The wood will need to be refinished in a couple years, over all the boat looks better than mint. The only draw back is one soft spot in the deck near the transom behind the bait station. The boat is listed a little high it started at 28000 and has dropped 4 grand in the past two months. The deck issue would have to be addressed right a way.
What would you offer???? Knowing that the deck would have to be done right after purchase, and there is only another 2 months left in our fishing season before winter stars to set in. Also the boat has been kept on a trailer for its life....
Even at 24k that is REALLY HIGH, not a little high, for a modified closed transom 22' with a late 90's single outboard on an aftermarket bracket. I guess it would have to pictures but I would not offer more than 14k - 16k (maybe) in my mind. That is only if everything else if truly "MINT" - "Very Good" condition and in strong working order.
The biggest things I would be concerned with
#1 The floor issue..$1000 - 1500 and 100 - 200 hours (weekend time and work week time) if you just do the floor yourself. New fuel lines, wiring, etc, add an extra $1000 - $1500 and another 100 or so hours. It is a big job and the costs and time add up fast!
Also with the T-Top attached to a rotten floor would be big concern for me. If the floor is week it mind not take much to rip it right off the floor. The standard floor from whaler never had extra mounting plates for a T-Top so most are just relying on the wood under the gelcoat deck to hold them in place.
#2 The removal of the sea drive and transom repair could concern me. If they do not have documentation of the process I.E. pictures of the rebuild and a detailed invoice for services rendered.
#3 Motor and fuel system. The all of the fuel line will need to be replaced for sure, and the motor will need a professional survey.
Here is a 25' with twin 150's in your back yard for 13,800 http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum2/...12187.html
The motors could still have some good years ahead of them. I would have them surveyed for sure
I would pass on the boat you looked at for the current asking price or anyting close to it. For 24k there are other boats that I would consider first. Some of them might not even be whalers.

1993 23' Walkaround Whaler Drive
I agree with some of your comparisions, but one thing you have to remember this is a closed transom 22 and pictures would help. Not sure if this will work.
I guess you will have to cut and paste, I have not mastered the computer yet.
I think your pricing is right for your standard run of the mill whaler, this whaler is far from your normal find. I also think 24k is high, but I was thinking more in the range of 18 to 20k. If you can take a look at the pictures in the ad, the boat actucally looks better in person.
I'm very picky when it comes to buying used products, as it took me 5 years to find my perfect whaler. I've also found a local who has experience in replacing the decks on the classic outrages. He has given a quote of 1500 to replace as long as the console . t-top and bait station are removed.
Let me know what you think after seeing the pictures, I feel GTL should offer the guy 17k, and see how they react. I think the owner is trying to move the boat as he has already started to lower his price. I would not give more than 19k or 20k.
And knowing GTL this would be a purchase for a life time, since owning his orignal 17 montalk from 1973 (which is one awesome looking boat, he needs to post some pictures of his wood work!!!). Thanks for your thoughts Jeff, its great to have neutral opinion on this boat, as GTL is a tough sell on any product.
That is a good looking boat that has been listed for some time. It does have the super console and big leaning post which are nice to have. The closed transom is nice as well but to me the price is still high for me knowing the floor is shot. But it really all comes down to how bad do you want the boat and how much are you willing to pay for it?
Love to know if you end up with the boat..keep us informed
