Dear Freinds:

I am purchasing a Garmin Data Card for my Garmin 276c. Can U use this card in my Garmin 178c which also takes the Garmin Data Card? The 276c is portable and I used it often on other boats where my 178c is not present. Please note that I am not talking about their SD cards.

Can I assume that the data on the card will be unaffected by where the card is inserted? I won't be saving any data to the cards.

Thank you

Gorji

If it is the same size card it will work.........I have a Garmin 188c and I have used it in several other models with no problem. If it fits in the slot it should work with no problem

Thanks. I'd thought that the card may get modified once inserted into the GPS and become not useable in my other GPS.

If you look on the card itself you will see a small movable slot like the ones on a SD card that prevents anything from being written on it also.

A little update:

I purchased Canada East Garmin Data Card (preprogrammed). Inserted into my 276c and beautiful maps showed up.

Yesterday went to the boat which is 2 hours away. Put the same card in and my 178c took it but I never got past "reading card" message. I shut the GPS down and restarted. Same issue.

The SW version is 2.20 and Basemap Worldwide Marine version is 1.0 I have 2 theories on why it did not work:
1. It need a firmware update; none since 2006 and there have been several although none of the firmware descriptions state its needed to read the card.
2. My 276c put a code into the card so it can only be the GPS reading it.

Any thoughts?

To do a firmware update I will have to buy a Garmin Data Card Reader (USCool; another $40. It just does not end!!

Thank you
Gorji
