I'm have a devil of a time filling the fuel tank and suspect it is not venting properly. There are also engine performance issues that may be due to poor venting as well. The problem is I don't see how the tank is vented. The fill pipe is located in the enginewell (port side) and, even filling at the slowest speed, fuel will stand in the filler hose making it very difficult to fuel.
My guess is that you have one of the boats with an Attwood deck fill. This deck fill has the tank vent incorperated into it. They were a problem. The only solution is to install a conventional vent thru the hull and replace the deck fill, no easy task.
Boston Whaler didn't issue a re-call but covered the conversion for those who complained.
Do you think it would be possible to simply add a vent and continue using the current fill pipe? I'll check again, but I didn't see an connector on the take for the vent hose so would I have to drill a hole?
There should be a vent hose coming from the tank and attaching to a fitting on the deck fill. If you add an external vent take that deck fill off and throw it as far as you can and install a new one
As far as drilling the tank is concerned rember a couple things, all of the shavings will go into the tank and some may end up in your engine and the is other you are working with gasoline and a fuel tank is a bomb just waiting for ignition.
Just took another look in the boat and I found the vent hose and I see where it is connected to the filler just forward of the fuel fill line. I agree the solution is to replace the filler and re-route the vent to a thru-hull fitting. Probably a good idea to replace the hoses at that time as well.
I am not sure if this type of fuel vent will work on your Dauntless but it might be worth looking at.
Some of the newer style boats also used this same vent. One of them was the Outrage 17' II with the Accu-Track hull did use this vent that I know of.
Here is a photo showing the vent on the port side from a distance: http://www.whalercentral.com/infusion...ser_id=227
