OK guys time to brag about speed. This guy claims 51mph in this
http://whalercentral.com/infusions/personal_page/view_personal_page.php?user_id=9617
I top out at 40mph on glass with my 16 fter with a 90TLR and I feel like I am flying... In fact I cannot really imagine going faster and it being safe...
The lead pic on this guys page is just nuts !!!
So guys... How fast are you going in your whalers ? I want boat name, top speed, feet, power, hull, and model ! Let the bragging begin !!!
Mandarina - 40mph - 16 feet - 1 90TLR - deep V - 16SL

Sippy Cup, 33 mph in just under 1' chop and a tail wind, 50 HP Honda 4 stoke carb, 15' Dauntless.
The name is just a nickname referencing fuel consumption during a 20 to 25 mph cruise.

I've got a 17ft Montauk with a 135 Mercury (came with the boat). According to the gps on a calm river in a straightaway, I max out at 52mph. I did it for about a minute and backed off. In my opinion, it is stupidly fast and unsafe.
I like to run 35mph. That way my eye sockets are flapping and I can talk to my son seated next to me. OF course my father the bass fisherman thinks 52 is putting along and likes to run 65 in his 19ft. bass boat rocket. Needless to say I don't join him all that much.
Good luck with your investigation!

My 17 montauk with 90 hp yam alone perfect conditions I have not been able to break 41 mph .I stopped trying so nothing else would break. But i enjoy a dose of HP every once and a while. 3200-3500 rpms give me the best cruise and fuel consumption.

1982 17ft Montauk, 1994 Ocean Pro 115, over-bored at a powerhead rebuild, not sure what it would dyno at now, 17 pitch prop, trimmed up so it's begging for mercy @ 5650 rpm, light fuel and my skinny a**, my Raytheon/Apelco 365 fish finder reports 52+ mph in a slight left hand turn (the transducer being on the right side of the transom will move faster on the outside of the arc, like a phonograph record spins faster on the outer rim than close to the center and the propeller torque is less induced drag).
HOWEVER, the fishfinder speed is calculated by a spall magnetic paddle wheel fixed to the back of the transducer and considering the horsepower "nvaccaro" has on the same hull and his report? I seriously have doubts as to the actual TWS.
All I know is; into a good headwind it starts a little chine walk if trimmed too high and it's kind of frightening. If a decisive turn had to be made to avoid a hazzard? Especially to the port? It would be curtains. I never had the guts to keep it at speed long enough to allow the GPS to stabilize and report a good speed average. So yeah, when the FWC imposed a 30 mph limit outside the Manatee Zone during the day? It nevered bothered me. 21mph is perfect for time v fuel considerations. With the kids on the foredeck, whatever it takes to plane her off, then just enough to keep it there.
Cool thread tho'. I once saw a 15 Sport in Marathon tied up at the Bahia Honda Park Marina with a 150 Black Max Merc on it. The owner was getting a good dose from the Ranger. Never in a million would I board that!

My pathetic Merc 25 4 stroke will push my 13 footer along at 29-30mph, That's with it jacked up to the point that the cavitation plate is running dry, I want to ride with nvccaro`s Dad who runs 65 in his bass boat. That's what I run in my raceboat thats only 14' long and about 225 pounds without the engine.

How about a 600hp 70mph 25' WhalerDrive Tempation. That is my idea of fun. I never really cared for these boats until I saw this one.
Scream and Fly article
Our twin 150 Merc powered 22' Guardian will do 51 - 52mph on a gps with a pair of crappy aluminum props.
Our old 17 Montauk with a 90hp Merc Inline 6 would do 47 - 49 on a gps.
And my favorite (16 years old when we had it) was a 15 Supersport with a Merc 75hp Inline 4. It had a tall stainless prop and saw the mid - high 50's on the old style water pressure speedo.
My older OMC powered Whalers were/are great but, never really where speed demons like the Merc powered hulls. Personally I like to go faster than most in the Whaler group. A cruise on clam water under 30 mph is to slow for my tastes.

My 86 Montauk + 86 Johnson 90 + By Myself (260 pounds) + 12 gallons of fuel + 13x19 aluminum prop + a 10mph tailwind + flat water = 44.8mph on GPS
Fast enough for me.

I got out for the first time on my 1990 18 Outrage, twin 70 hp Yamaha, mounted 1 hole up, stainless props, 5,900 rpm WOT, half tank, myself and one passenger, GPS read almost 39 mph. I could probably pick up a little more speed as I get more accosted to trimming these motors. My Montauk with a 90hp Johnson went 41 mph plus, but I feel like I'm going faster on the 18 Outrage. I was expecting the Outrage to do above 45 mph.
I checked the cavitation plates and they looked good for height setting.

Had a 17' Avenger, hyd jack plate, Merc 200 hp, nose cone and low water pick up, would do 70-80 mph (radar gun). Flipped boat, dislocated elbow, bruised ribs, concussion, ended up in hospital for a few days. Morale of the story.............40 mph is plenty fast now!

Classic '95 Outrage 17 with an '04 Mercury 90hp 4-stroke, mounted 3 holes up, aluminum 17P prop, fully trimmed at 6000 RPM runs 41-42 mph (GPS). Running like this it likes to chinewalk if not on calm water or directly down wind. I wouldn't mind getting a little more out of it, but it's fun

I dunno, I nailed the throttle full once trying to beat a nasty down pour in blinding "Hail" and wind, and I almost ran up the back of another "Whaler", luckily his "BLUE" interior stuck out "large" as I closed in way too fast "he was on Plow, I was on Plane", I yanked back on the throttle as I pulled to port blasting past him with his mouth open, that would have looked REALLY "STUPID" if we "hooked up"

Haven't got 'my' Whaler yet (17' Montauk, Yamaha 90 TLRC with 1 hour on it) but my other toy boat below is a Kevlar 20' Allison with an old Merc 2.4 Bridgeport Offshore ~300hp, with a combined fueled weight just under 1000 lbs.
I've been on radar at 118 with that... 80mph is where that boat starts to get fun. I suspect the Montauk will run about 40.

Just adding an addendum to my post as I received a PM from member 'nvaccaro'. My post was ambiguous and it may seem I was doubting his speed data on his rig by choosing my words poorly. I do that a lot on the internet. It's a curse. I sent him this reply:
Hey!
First of all I'll say I don't doubt you at all. My post was ambiguous, sorry.
I have doubts about what MY fishfinder was telling me regarding my boats speed of 52+. If you were reporting around the same with your 135, 20 more hp than what I have, and the same hull then I really don't think I was going that fast.TWS (*true water speed/actual speed over the surface), GPS will give you speed over the globe, if you are fighting a 3kt tide , your true speed over the water could be up to 3kts more than what a GPS is actually telling you, the reverse is also true, with a following tide, GPS will be adding indicated kts or mph to your read out.
K, thanks for the shout, I'm going to post again in that thread unless others think I was doubting you too.
Doug

You're nuts! I like it! Growing up in Jersey I had a ride once in a 'Jersey Skiff'. Are you familiar? Old Timey wooden boats with a very long nose section, cockpit in the rear and Detroit big blocks for power. I once had a ride on Lake Hopatcong doing 60-70. Once!

A 90 HP on a 15.. 51 MPH may be doable but very dangerous...
I squeeze 42 MPH out of my 17 with a 90 HP per a GPS. No jack plates, 19 inch stainless, standard mounting...

Quite familiar, as my uncle had one with a big Cadillac engine in it. Great idea, total failure - the engine was too heavy and the boat, while decently speedy, would never get the lift a skiff needs to really fly. He named it the So-Slo.
My dad used to race tunnel boats on Lake Hopatcong, up til the early 70s. Those old plywood tunnels were the really nutso boats.
I'm interested now to see life at a Whaler's pace, though. I can't imagine a Montauk has a rougher ride than a ModVP slamming into waves down in the Barnegat bay or the Hudson River, or the Adirondack lakes when the wind and wakes pick up.

My 15 with a 70 hp Yamaha would run 42 on gps.
My 20 outrage with 175 Merc. was a 50 Mph boat, gps.
I once had a guy in a key west bay boat think he could beat me back to the dock while we were fishing the flats. He found Out that my little 15 was pretty Quick.

I just wanted to thank Ambush for his response to my pm. I replied to him with a another pm. Anyway, just wanted to say I appreciated his response. I was at my parents's house last night and a neighbor showed up. He apparently had a 17 ft Montauk about 10 years ago. He said with a 90hp Evinrude with a full tank of gas, he would get between 40 and 45 on his speedo. He's a big guy so I'm sure that factors in.
Have a good Sunday.
