Member Posts: 15 Comments: 2 Joined: 05/03/09	I have owned a 26 ft Outrage for years but have always wanted to find an older 13-16 footer with no engine that I could restore and use in the river. last nite for my 25th wedding aniversary my wife surprised me with the news that she found and bought one for me.I have yet to see the boat but wanted to know what engine it is rated for and what mwmbers have repowered with. And yes, I am a lucky guy.

Not everyone will agree with me here, but most of the folks I know who own a 13' BW usually use a 40hp motor. I'm running a Yamaha 40hp with my set up and like it a lot. A friend of mine has a 1974 13' and he has a 2004 Yamaha 40hp on his boat and loves it. Congrats on your "Gift" from your wife.......where can I get one like that? lol... It seems like it sits low in the rear in the water. With one person in it, the bow is up in the air. Is this normal? I cant imagine how much more the 40 would have weighed. Any thought would be appreciated.

I wanted a brand new four stroke EFI. Ended up with the Mercury 30HP. It weighs close to 160lbs, which means, the boat sits pretty in the water, and NO water comes in over the stern when you go from 30+MPH to zero! I love to go fast - and yes the 40hp would go faster - but I also wanted something that made sense. Keep us posted. Tyler Doggett

Member Posts: 9 Comments: 0 Joined: 04/22/09	I recently purchased a 1982 13' with no motor and went through the same debate. I ended up with a 1988 40hp Johnson. Of course a motor from that vintage is not putting out 40hp at the prop, probably more like 30-35hp, but it's also lighter than a 4-stroke. Believe me, the boat flies. My kids intend to use it for water skiing and tubing so I opted for the larger engine as folks from this blog indicated 25hp wouldn't be enough. My opinion: if you're purchasing a "newer" 4-stroke then 30-35hp will do the trick. Anything larger will be too heavy and cause too much bow rise. Our boat is in good shape, but of course my wife wants me to do a complete restoration in the winter. Any advice on sanding and painting would be appreciated.

I've got a Honda bf30 and it'll do 28 mph running as light as possible following the wind. Pulling a tube with a 60 lb kid is a real chore.

If all a person wants to do is putt putt around and not use their boat for anything more than cruising around, ya a 25 or 30 hp will do. But if someone is actually going to use their boat to actually pull a tube or water skiers, then the 40hp is the way to go. I'm always pulling my kids around with our 40 and the boat does well. I think my boat would sit awfully low with a 40 4 stroke on the rear. I do envy those who can have it. I have an old 13 with the 15" transom. I sure wish there was a Yamaha that would work. I will prbably get a 25 4 stroke.

Member Posts: 15 Comments: 0 Joined: 03/18/08	The four stroke 40's are way too heavy for a classic 13', especially if it has the notched transom. 40 is the way to go, as long as you can go with an older 2 stroke, perhaps that has been rebuilt. If you insist on new power, then 25 or 30 is about as much as I would recomment weight wise. But it will come at the cost of reduced speed. I have a 2 stroke 30 on mine and it does alright; about 25 knots with my 220# butt in it.
