Welcome aboard!
I'm far from knowledgable on the 17 but I don't think 1958 is the correct year. The 17 didn't come along till later. Do you have a HIN? If so, you can go down the left sidebar on this page to view model specs and I think under "articles" you will find the ID by HIN.

Someone is trying to pull a fast one on you if they represented it as a 1958.
No such thing.
The first 16'/17' models were not made until 1961.
Lots of information in the articles section.

You will need to know your stencil number to find out what year it is.
The stencil number could be on the inside of the transom or inside the bow locker.

I hate to see sellers misrepresent their boats.
Isn't there a law against that?

Joe - if there isn't a law against it there should be.

I think it is called "False Advertising"...
That's pretty blatant as the ad says "Antique Boston Whaler 1st Year Made"
The advertiser should probably be tarred and feathered and then set adrift in the Bearing Sea. I would be nice and give him a some antique matches (first year made) so he could possibly light the tar on his body to keep himself warm while he is drifting.
I have no sympathy for Con Artists...
I thought the ad might be a typo but that would be 1968 maybe, instead of 1958, but it still would not be the first year made for the 17' models which is what he also says it is.. It is a 16' model which it was called then.

Regardless of the age it looks to be in pretty good condition...........Does anyone have an idea of the approx age a model?

Tom,
I don't see how you can tell that from those photos. You must have good eyes.
The interior should be blue so we have no idea if the outside has been painted either.
Regards of the possible false advertising, the boat does look good for the price.
Maybe the new owner can give us a stencil number on the hull so he can find out what year it really is.

I called that seller, I think his name is Ron. He was a prick on the phone when I asked him to email me better photos than were on Craigslist. He said some garbage about serious buyers not needing to see photos and how he had two buyers coming to look that day. That was several weeks ago, I was happy to see that he had to repost it on Craigslist again. I hung up without getting into the fact that there was no 17' in 1958. I hope you got it for less than the $2800 he was asking...

Wow, I have dealt with pricks like the guy Ron you dealt with on the phone. If he's not willing to send you photos with more clarity, he's obviously trying to hide something.

No offense guys, but your calling a seller names who isn't here to defend himself, and your not making a new Whaler owner feel very good about a boat he just purchased. Hopefully the new owner, jungle867, will come back so we can all find out more about the boat, what year it really is and how he plans on using it.
jungle867, from what I can see in the photo's , I agree with Joe, the boat looks nice and while it has probably been painted it looks like a good job. How do you plan on using the boat, create a personal page so we can see more of what you got. There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks on the board who can help you either restore the boat or enhance it to fit your needs.

moose,
No, I'm having a good day. I love Crooks as you can tell.
I see far too many boats miss-advertised and sometimes apparent and blatant falsely advertised.
I feel for anyone that doesn't know what they are buying and are at the mercy of the advertising crooks. Buyer Beware seems to be the old saying.
I rarely say anything about things like this but this boat seems to be grossly miss-advertised.
I have dealt with people like this in the past. I had one person tell me that the HIN number may not be the correct plate as they also told me, everyone in their state changes these HIN plates all the time. EXCUSE ME..... ?
I hope we didn't scare jungle867 off here as it appears he did buy a nice looking Whaler.
Unfortunately, it is not an Antique 1958 like he thought he was buying. The price also seems good if the boat is in good condition.
Hopefully he will get many years of enjoyment out of his new boat whatever year it is.

When I was seraching for my Whaler I had a guy over 500 miles away send me photos and a great description. I sent him a deposit and my wife and I headed down to pick it up. When I got there the only thing I found to be true was that the Seller was very good at Photo Shop. It looked like and entirely different boat in person. Then he began making all kinds of excuses and exceptions. Really ticked me off after driving that distance for nothing. I sure wish that Whaler Shopper had been around in those days. As Joe says, there are many crooks and hood-winkers out there! Overall though for the money it would appear that jungle got a pretty good boat

Joe, here's a true story from an honest man.
Boat registration in MT is handled by FWP (Fish, Wildlife, and Parks). I bought my Whaler in WA. When I registered it here the Title and the HIN plate didn't match exactly. (Can't remember the exact discrepancy, but I could go look it up if need be.) The warden told me they had to match and that I could simply add the missing info to the HIN plate on the boat. He even loaned me an electric scriber and an extension cord! So I took his tool out to the parking lot and added a few numbers to the plate! "Good enough" says he!!

That is the boat i bought. It is in really good shape. The title says 1958 and the guy ron was the second owner. I will look for the HID on the boat and will post back soon with more pictures. You guys are scaring me a bit, did I not buy a whaler at all?

jungle867,
Your boat won't have a HIN unless it was added later as those weren't required until the 70's. Check for a stencil number, in the anchor locker or perhaps on the title.
