The trim motor went out on my 1990 88 horse johnson and I can't seem to figure out how to get the old motor off??? There are three phillips head screws, two are pretty much impossible to reach. I sure hope someone can give me some help with this because I totally don't know what to do. Thanks alot!!

Erik,
You probably need to lift the engine slightly by removing all the mounting bolts.
Depending on the cable length, you should be able to twist the motor slightly to remove the trim/tilt unit and replace it.

I'm interested in which method you use. I looked at this on a 140 for a friend last year. Joe's suggestion looked possible on the 140 but seemed like a lot of trouble to lift the engine. I figured removing the larger trim/tilt assembly was much simpler since there was no engine lifting and all the bolts were easily accessible.

Tig,
I guess I wasn't clear enough.
Yes, lift the engine slightly and remove all engine bolts and twist the engine and then remove the entire trim tilt assembly. Replace the necessary parts and then reassemble.
The trim tilt unit bracket holds the two port and starboard engine brackets together.

Thanks for the help guys! I actually just got around to working on it a couple days ago. I took the 6 bolts off the power trim assembly and then took the pin out of the hydraulic cylinder. Then the entire unit just comes out. I don't have any equipment to lift the motor so a friend of mine told me how to do it this way and it was actually quite easy. Once the unit was off the motor came right out! Can't wait to put on the new motor and get to fishing!

Good to hear you've removed the unit. I did basically the same thing to my 1991 120hp Johnson. I drove the pins out, that's what I call "Grunt work," and was able to work on the complete unit. Just be careful removing the bolts holding the old trim motor in place. I broke several when I tried and ended up taking the unit to the mechanic to get them removed. Nice guy, didn't charge me a thing! Good customer relations...
re-installing the unit was a little dicier simply because I only had 1 set of hands, an extra set would have come in handy that day.
Good luck finishing the repair.
