I picked up a used 90 hp Nissan for dirt cheap from a good friend last weekend. Colored history, including a sinking and $600 restoration, a Boy Scout camp, and an out of business logger!
I want to ID the engine - I'm not familiar at all with Nissan outboards. Can any of you salty dogs make a guess on the vintage just by looking at the photo? The ID plate that was supposed to be stuck to the starboard side of the casting is long gone - nothing left but a little splotch of glue.
The long term plan is to rig this motor on 15 CC for my 23rd midlife crisis.

We used to have an 8 hp on our dingy growing up. It looked very similar as far as the graphics go. I would have to guess late 80's or early 90's. But it is just a guess.

Where did it sink, in fresh or salt water? Also how long was it underwater?

For what I paid it could have sunk in the Pacific and stayed for a month.
In fact, it did sink in Puget Sound but didn't stay long. Can't say for sure how long - that's part of the "colorful past". But our boat mechanic worked it over and declared it fit. He cleaned it up good inside and out, cylinders, cooling system, electronics, etc. It ran fine in a fresh water tank last year and hasn't seen salt water since. Guaranteed to at least run.
First things for me are compression test then tank test. Any other suggestions of conditions that might convince me not to go ahead and rig it?
BTW, the decals are similar to those in the 1992 parts catalog and different from those in the 1996 parts catalog. So Beantown is probably right - older than '92. I figured as much.

I called Nissan Marine. They asked a service technician who said the serial number should be stamped into the block. I had already looked around under the hood several times. Of course it was there staring right at me the whole time.
I sent them back a request via their website and got a response the next day. (It's a 1992.) Fast and friendly. Makes my day!

If it is anything like my 40 you'll really like it.

Thanks Mike. Good to know. It's going to take me weeks and weeks to actually get it up and running. Lots of honey-dos on the horizon! I'll post back after I make good progress.
