I like my Whalers on the powerful side... grew up with a tweaked out 70 on a 15'... airborn often.
but, would this be too much for a 17' Classic / Standard

I don't think that it will be too much power for the hull. I have seen quite a few 16/17's powered with 115s. I think that weight is going to be the biggest factor. It just may be a little stern-heavy, that's all.

The Horsepower is fine, I just think the weight of that motor is a bit much.

I have a 115 yamaha on a 84 17 montauk and I love this motor on the boat. Any thing less would not work for me. I 240 lbs and it picks me up on skis no problem. I think the 100 4 stroke would be a great motor for it. I dont think it has to much power but is there a such thing. The only thing I would not recommend is a dolphin fin, it made it very squirly. I wouldn't think the weight would be a factor unless you wanted a big kicker.

I have a mariner 115 on my 1980 montauk 17. Just a bit stern heavy
but even with 4 people and full load i get 42 mph out of it.
I love this engine but if i'll ever have to repower i'll go with the e-tec and
not the 4 strokes. Very heavy weight even at 90 Hp!

Capt., I have that setup on my '83 Montauk 17. Check out my personal page for a picture of how it sits in the water. The 100 hp will get the boat on plane *very* quickly. - Garret

Wow, Garret, nice boat. It does not look stern-heavy to me.
Looks like you got the green light, Capt.
